It has been an interesting few months for Flotilla 9-7. There were 2 other Illinois Flotillas, 9-1 and 9-3. It was decided that these 3 flotillas would be combined into one "Super" flotilla which has been designated as 9-11. It was felt that by merging these flotillas that we would become a stronger, more cohesive unit together than separately. We now meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Division Station in Sunset Marina at 10:00.

On September 7, 2019, 3 members of Flotilla 97 were tested by a QE examiner to see if they could pass the exam to become qualified crew members. These 3 members have been taking classes and studying for the past 2 years to be ready for this exam.

They first had to show the examiner how to tie essential knots that are used. They then had an oral exam where the examiner went through their Crew Manuals and asked various questions from that. If they passed tying knots and taking the oral exam, they then went out on the water.

They had to demonstrate raising and lowering the anchor. Someone then threw "Oscar" in the water and they had to demonstrate the questions that needed to be asked and then retrieve "Oscar" and pull him into the boat. The next exercise was coming across a disabled vessel and demonstrating how to take this vessel into a stern tow, and then pull the distressed vessel alongside their vessel and attach lines in the proper sequence to take then into a side tow.

We are proud to announce that Kimberly Ferris, John Ferris, and Kathe Diamond all passed their exams and are now qualified crew members!!! Congratulations to these three exceptional Coast Guard Auxiliarists!!.
