On Thursday, May 14, the Mayo Building's newly remodeled east entrance will reopen, marking an important milestone for the downtown campus' transformation and the future of patient arrival and departure at Mayo Clinic.
The updated and expanded Mayo east entrance now features improved weather protection, updated patient amenities, and will soon overlook a reimagined pedestrian courtyard. This outdoor area adjacent to the Mayo east entrance is expected to reopen in early summer and will include the return of familiar art installations, such as "Boy with Dolphin."
Later this summer, the Gonda Building's east entrance, which is also closed and under renovation, will open and welcome valet services. For the duration of Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Rochester construction, the east entrances will serve valet, hotel and local shuttle drop-off and pick-up for patients visiting downtown, with an additional and enhanced valet location becoming available when the Arrival Building opens in fall 2026.
These operations are expected to remain in place until the two new clinical buildings, the future facility at the former Ozmun site and the Bernard E. and Edith B. Waterman Building, open in 2030 and a new vision for campus circulation takes shape.
What to expect
-As the Mayo Building's east entrance reopens, several operational updates will take effect:
-The Mayo east entrance will be open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will serve hotel and local shuttle services for the duration of construction and will also be open for pedestrian access.
-Monitors in the Mayo east entrance lobby seating area will have a live video feed of shuttle arrivals and departures, along with overhead announcements, allowing patients to wait comfortably in the seating area with nearby restrooms until their shuttle arrives.
-To assist patients, a General Service desk near the Mayo east entrance will be staffed with wheelchair and transport support on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
-The Mayo east entrance will feature a layered security model that, in addition to active and visible security, includes technology that helps to identify safety threats before they occur. Together, this approach enables real-time monitoring and quick responses across campus.
A series of other patient arrival and departure options will remain unchanged, while others will adjust through the end of the summer:
-The Mayo Clinic intercampus patient shuttle (for patients and caregivers) will continue service at the Gonda west and Charlton west entrances.
A series of valet updates will also support patients as they arrive at a changing downtown campus:
- The Hilton Building valet location closed on Thursday, May 7.
- A second valet lane will be added at the Mayo Building south entrance.
- Valet service will continue at Charlton, Gonda north entrance, Mayo south entrance and Baldwin.
By the end of 2026, new arrival options will begin to change how patients, staff and visitors experience Mayo Clinic downtown.
Additional construction projects across both Mayo Clinic campuses in Rochester — including the South Ramp, Arrival Building, West Transit Village Staff Ramp and Saint Marys Campus Staff Ramp — remain on track for completion later this year.
Paired with enhanced digital tools and expanded arrival options, these new facilities will support a more personalized and seamless patient and staff arrival and departure experience.
