On This Date: It was on January 10, 1912 when Hammondsport, NY inventor Glenn Curtiss conducted a critical test of his “flying boat”, his Curtiss Model E, in San Diego. While the test was unsuccessful (it struggled to get off the water), it galvanized Curtiss’s vision of a seaplane and later that year in July on Keuka Lake, Curtiss successfully flew his “flying boat” and the rest was history. With World War I approaching, Curtiss developed these aircraft for the United States and its allies. Considered the Father of Naval Aviation, as well as the founder and driving force of the American Aircraft industry, Glenn Curtiss’s life and achievements are celebrated and preserved at the wonderful Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport (bottom image). This is a must-see treasure in the Finger Lakes Region, where the legacy of one of the great minds in American history lives on.

The Annual Grand Marais/Cook County Airport Fly-in/Drive-In pancake breakfast will be Saturday, September 27th at the Grand Marais airport. Note the date was moved back one week to coincide with more fall colors, and to hopefully bring in more pilots from around the region. The annual event is sponsored by the Arrowhead Eagles Aviation Organization, a local 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization that seeks to support the local airport and provide aviation scholarships to local citizens. Join the Eagles for breakfast with blueberry pancakes and sausage links, and enjoy watching airplanes come and go, and see vintage airplanes on display. There will be discount airplane rides, weather permitting, and lots of fall colors to view from the air!

The event venue is the Sawtooth Aviation hangar at 123 Airport Road, Grand Marais - The Grand Marais/Cook County Airport. Saturday, September 27th, from 8:00AM to 11:00AM. Cost is $12 for adults, $8 for kids under 16.
