Attention Norfolk drivers!

A long-term I-64 west lane closure between Tidewater Drive and Patrol Road in Norfolk is scheduled to reopen as early as overnight September 12, weather and schedule permitting (backup date is September 19.)

To implement the reopening of the I-64 west mainline lane overnight, the ramp from I-564 east to I-64 west will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. as the new roadway configuration is put into place.

Along with the mainline reopening, the I-64 west left entrance ramp near Little Creek Road and the travel lane alongside the Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes will close as additional work continues.

Once complete, motorists will continue to have two general purpose lanes open westbound toward the HRBT.

Impact to morning commute anticipated, Motorists should follow the posted detour

VDOT has closed I-95 at mile marker 85.1 near I-295 in Henrico County due to an overturned tractor trailer crash. The closure is anticipated to impact tomorrow morning's commute (Sept. 10).

Motorists should follow the posted detour which is to take Exit 84 to northbound I-295 to northbound Route 1 to eastbound Route 656 (Sliding Hill Road) back to northbound I-95.

The Route 1212 bridge in Damascus opened to traffic on September 1. This marks the completion of Hurricane Helene repair and replacement projects for the Bristol District.

The hurricane, which hit Southwest Virginia in September 2024, created over 500 sites in need of repairs or replacement at a cost of $195.5 million.

There were 394 structures, including bridges and culverts, that were impacted by Hurricane Helene. Five bridges were in need of replacement, including the Route 1212 bridge in Damascus.

“The sheer force of Hurricane Helene moved the former Route 1212 bridge from its location across Laurel Creek to the shoreline,” John Bechtold, P.E., Bristol District Bridge Engineer, said. “It really showed the power of the storm to lift up and move a concrete structure from its foundation.”

The 394 structures impacted by Hurricane Helene included the five bridge replacements, four culvert replacements, other structure damages, erosion repairs and debris removal activities.

The other bridges that were replaced are the Route 859 bridge at Konnarock in Washington County; the Route 725 bridge at Taylors Valley in Washington County; the Route 847 bridge in Grayson County; and the Route 800 (St. Clair Creek Road) bridge in Smyth County.

The Towing and Recovery Incentive Program (TRIP) is making a measurable difference on Virginia's I-81 corridor.

Since TRIP expanded to I-81, participating tow providers have:

Responded to more than 2,000 incidents
Cleared scenes in an average of 77 minutes, about 40 minutes faster than the three-year period before TRIP.

This means fewer traffic disruptions and a safer, more reliable I-81 for the millions of motorists who depend on this critical transportation corridor.

Attention Rockingham County!

Work on the widening of Route 11 (South Valley Pike) from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway in Rockingham County will officially begin September 9. The project extends from just south of the Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) intersection to just north of Heritage Drive, just south of the Harrisonburg city limits.

The initial construction will occur at the intersection of South Valley Pike and Oakwood Drive, where Route 11 is already four lanes.

During this phase, motorists should expect single lane closures on northbound and southbound Route 11 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday as crews complete temporary widening on the shoulders.

The second phase of the project will begin in late 2026 or early 2027 and involves the widening of Route 11 where it is currently just one lane northbound and southbound. During construction, a single lane will remain open in each direction on Route 11, which will be widened on its western side utilizing as much of the existing roadway as possible. The center turn lane will serve as the southbound travel lane during construction.

Six-foot paved shoulders will be included in the widening to accommodate bicycles along the corridor. The median will vary in width. Narrow median areas will have a raised median including curbs. Wide median areas will be graded with a ditch.

Additional improvements will include two new right turn lanes and traffic-signal upgrades at the Route 11 intersections with Route 704 (Oakwood Drive and Cecil Wampler Road). One right turn lane will serve motorists going from eastbound Oakwood Drive to southbound Route 11. The other will be constructed on northbound Route 11 to eastbound Cecil Wampler Road. The addition of these new turn lanes will decrease traffic delays at both intersections.

These projects will enhance safety and traffic flow. All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
In July 2026 the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded an $18.3 million construction contract to A & J Development And Excavation Inc. of Mount Crawford, Va. Completion is scheduled for August 2028.
