It is with great sadness, that the Martens family announces the passing of Hans H. Martens, father of the Silver Rail Club's founder, Peter Martens and his younger brother Edward, on September 8th, 2023. Hans was best known for being the SRC's 'Senior Engineer'.
In 1992 he retired from his long time career with General Electric as a highly trained Field Service Engineer, having worked to install and maintain gas, steam and nuclear turbine power generators along the east coast, in other parts of the US, and in several countries around the world.
His N-gauge 3-track layout, and the HO Marklin layout he and Peter made depicting his home town in Germany were always a favorite among hobbyists, rail-fans, and families who came to see the displays set up at senior homes and model train events. Hans would always actively involve everyone around him in a fun and engaging way that made each rail-event a most memorable experience. With a twinkle in his eyes, and a genuine smile, he would draw people in so they could share in the experience of operating, or simply watching his model trains.
His warm and gentle ways, wonderful humor and vast knowledge of the hobby that he was willing to share with those around him, will be missed by everyone who knew him. Hans was still a man so 'young at heart', at age 94.
Just as his grandchildren will always remember and love their Opa, we will always remember and love our Dad! - Peter and Edward Martens
