Innovation and growth define our journey! In 2017, we celebrated a significant extension as the Lynchburg Amtrak route reached Roanoke, bringing passenger rail back to the Star City and opening up the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains to more travelers. This expansion underscored the growing demand for efficient rail transportation in Virginia.

A monumental step forward came in 2020 with the creation of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA). This marked a new era of strategic investment and development, ensuring the future of Virginia's passenger rail. We're proud of the progress and excited for what's next!

Our commitment to connecting Virginia continued to grow in 2012! That year, we launched Amtrak service to Norfolk, opening up new travel possibilities to the vibrant Hampton Roads region. This expansion brought convenient and comfortable rail options to even more Virginians.

Then, in 2013, the historic Newport News route transitioned to state-supported service, solidifying our dedication to enhancing regional connectivity. These steps were crucial in building a comprehensive Virginia passenger rail network.

The Newport News station has become a transit hub for multiple providers in the state including Hampton Roads Transit and Virginia Breeze Bus Lines.

We're celebrating Transportation Day by taking the whole week to highlight the incredible journey of state-supported passenger rail in Virginia! Amtrak Virginia has been connecting communities and driving economic growth for nearly two decades. We'll be sharing major milestones that have shaped our service, showcasing how we've grown and continue to evolve.

To kick things off, let's journey back to where it all began: In 2009, Virginia launched its first state-supported Amtrak service to Lynchburg, a pivotal moment that set the tracks for future expansion. Just a year later, in 2010, we expanded our reach, bringing reliable Amtrak service to Richmond, further strengthening Virginia's passenger rail network.

It's National Bike Month, and we need to talk about your best commuter upgrade. 🚲🚆 Amtrak Virginia lets you bring your bike on board for a small fee! Instead of driving to the trailhead, you can *train* to the trailhead. Your legs will thank you later (or yell at you, depending on the trail).

Speaking of trails! Mark your calendar: Roanoke is hosting the USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Bike National Championship in July 2026. 🏆⛰️
