On June 25 and 26, 1832, the Battle of Velasco erupted at the mouth of the Brazos River.

This clash between Texian colonists and Mexican forces at Fort Velasco marked one of the first armed conflicts leading to the Texas Revolution. The battle started when colonists, attempting to transport cannon to Fort Anahuac, were denied passage by Mexican troops at Fort Velasco.

After a night of intense fighting, the Mexican forces surrendered, mainly due to ammunition shortages. This victory allowed the Texians to continue their mission to Anahuac.

Fort Velasco, originally built by Mexican soldiers to enforce customs and immigration laws, saw several iterations over the years. During the Texas Revolution and later in the Civil War, new forts were constructed at the same strategic location.

After the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, the newly formed Republic of Texas government briefly met at Velasco, as it offered protection and accommodations when many other towns had been destroyed.

Today, the historic site of Fort Velasco is part of Surfside Beach, Texas. Just about 100 miles north is San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site. Both were important locations within Stephen F. Austin's colony, with San Felipe serving as the capital and Fort Velasco being at a key entry point.

On March 2, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence was passed unanimously in Independence Hall at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

59 delegates, elected from each Texas settlement, signed the six-page document in the simple wooden building. A replica of Independence Hall stands in present-day Washington, part of a larger historical complex dedicated to interpreting the stories of the revolution and republic.
