β€’ A buoyant air mass will ignite over the central Plains and Midwest today, spawning dangerous severe thunderstorms.

β€’ Ahead of a new low pressure system in Kansas today, hot and humid air will surge northward ahead of a front in the Upper Midwest. All the while, a swing in the jet stream, which carries a streak of strong wind energy with it, will siphon cold air high above the surface. The strongly unstable surface layer of heated air is bound to convect and launch severe thunderstorm activity across much of the central Plains and Midwest, mainly this evening.

β€’ The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk, a 2 out of 5 on the storm severity scale, which stretches from northeastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska through most of northern Illinois. Cities such as Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., Des Moines, Iowa, and Peoria and Naperville, Ill., will be at risk.

β€’ The most intense storms, isolated supercells and small lines of severe thunderstorms, will be capable of damaging gusts up to 70 mph, hail greater than 2 inches in diameter, and even a few tornadoes.

β€’ Entering the weekend, severe thunderstorms ahead of the cold front are expected to shift toward the Ohio Valley through New England, but another storm system exiting the northern Rockies will ignite similarly dangerous weather in the northern High Plains.

β€’ Strong to severe thunderstorms will form across the northern Plains once again this afternoon and evening leading to travel delays.

β€’ A disturbance will move across southern Canada and the northern Plains today causing strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening across parts of eastern North Dakota, eastern South Dakota and into far western Minnesota. Main risks from these thunderstorms will be strong wind gusts up to 60 to 70 mph, hail and even a couple of tornadoes.

β€’ A Slight Risk, or a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather probability scale, has been issued by the government's Storm Prediction Center for parts of southeastern North Dakota, eastern South Dakota and far western Minnesota. This threat area includes Fargo, N.D., and Pierre, S.D.

National Forecast

β€’ Starting Today, June is about to heat up.

β€’ A low pressure system will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the Great Plains along with extending into Texas, New Mexico and eastern Arizona. There is a severe weather threat associated with these storms, primarily in southwestern Texas and the Northern Plains. The greatest risk will start in the evening hours, in eastern South Dakota, southeast North Dakota and western Minnesota. The main concern for these storms will be damaging winds and hail. However, an isolated tornado should not be ruled out.

β€’ Additionally, a cold front clipping the Gulf Coast will help fuel isolated showers and thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast states.

β€’ In the Pacific Northwest, scattered showers are possible due to a low pressure system off the coast of Oregon and Washington.

β€’ Scattered showers are also possible in eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia thanks to another low pressure off Florida’s east coast.

β€’ Meanwhile, the rest of the U.S. can expect clear or partly cloudy skies and to remain dry.

β€’ For many areas of the country, temperatures are warming up. The Desert Southwest will be particularly hot, where some areas will see temperatures over 100 degrees. The South-Central and Gulf Coast states will also be seeing hot temperatures, with highs expected to be in the upper 80s and 90s. Much of the Pacific Northwest will see high temperatures in the upper 60s along with the 70s and 80s, although in the coldest spots of the northern Rockies, highs will be in the 50s and 60s. Meanwhile, the rest of the U.S. can anticipate high temperatures to be in the 70s and 80s, however, there could be more fluctuations in localized areas.

β€’ An area of strong to severe thunderstorms will develop across the northern Plains this afternoon and evening.

β€’ A cold front will move across North Dakota, South Dakota, western Nebraska and parts of far eastern Wyoming this afternoon and evening causing thunderstorms to form. Thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, hail and even a few tornadoes will be possible.

β€’ A Slight Risk, or a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather probability scale, has been issued by the government's Storm Prediction Center for parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, western Nebraska and far eastern Wyoming. This threat area includes Bismarck, N.D. and Rapid City, S.D.

National Forecast

β€’ June continues to be off to a sunny start for some, while the rest of the nation will see showers and storms.

β€’ Today’s weather will primarily be shaped by multiple high and low pressure systems, along with an extended stationary front in the Southern U.S.

β€’ Throughout the day, scattered showers and thunderstorms could be anticipated throughout the Great Plains and the Southeastern U.S. along with extending into Texas and New Mexico. There is a possibility that these thunderstorms may be severe. The greatest chance of dangerous storms will be in central North Dakota, western South Dakota, northwestern Nebraska and far eastern Wyoming. The main concerns associated with these thunderstorms will be damaging winds and hail. However, an isolated tornado should not be ruled out.

β€’ Additionally, the tallest peaks of the Rockies in Montana, Idaho, and northwestern Wyoming could pick up some wet snow or a mix of rain and snow. Northwestern Montana and northeastern Idaho may face continuous showers throughout the day.

β€’ Eastern New England may also see isolated showers, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.

β€’ Meanwhile, the rest of the U.S. can expect clear or partly cloudy skies and to remain dry.

β€’ Temperatures will reach the 50s and 60s in the coolest spots of the northern Rockies and northern New England. In the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin and extending into the Northern Plains, the Midwest, Mid-South and the Mid-Atlantic, high temperatures are anticipated to be in the 70s and 80s. Meanwhile highs in 90s are expected in the Desert Southwest, the South-Central U.S., and in the Gulf Coast states.

β€’ Gusty thunderstorms are expected to fire over the Central Plains and Tennessee Valley this afternoon and evening.

β€’ A low pressure system will develop over eastern Colorado today. Strong winds aloft as well as plentiful instability plus the addition of ample moisture will lead to severe thunderstorms pulsing in the Central Plains.

β€’ A Slight Risk, or a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather probability scale, exists from northeastern Colorado to southwestern Nebraska and western Kansas. This threat area includes Greeley and Aurora, Colo., Colby and Garden City, Kan., and McCook and North Platte, Neb. Damaging hail and strong wind gusts will be the primary concern, but isolated tornadoes are also possible.

β€’ Meanwhile, a cold front will trigger severe thunderstorms for portions of the Tennessee Valley this afternoon. Like the Plains, oodles of moisture is in play thanks to the Gulf while brisk winds aloft and moderate instability will aid in thunderstorm development.

β€’ Another Slight Risk has been issued for far northeastern Arkansas, far southeastern Missouri, northeastern Mississippi, northwestern Alabama and western Tennessee. This includes Memphis and Jackson, Tenn. and Huntsville, Ala.

National Forecast

β€’ For much of the country, June will be off to a sunny start, while other portions of the nation will receive a stormy start to the month.

β€’ Today's weather will primarily be shaped by multiple high and low pressure systems, along with a large frontal system stretching from North Dakota into the Lower Midwest and extending into the Mid-Atlantic.

β€’ Throughout the day, scattered showers and thunderstorms can be anticipated in throughout the Southeastern U.S. and Great Plains. Severe thunderstorms are also possible. The greatest chance of dangerous storms will be in western Kansas, southwestern Nebraska, northeastern Colorado, and southwestern Wyoming. The main concerns associated with these thunderstorms will be damaging winds and hail.

β€’ Additionally, the tallest peaks of the Rockies in Montana, Idaho, and northwestern Wyoming could pick up some wet snow or a mix of rain and snow.

β€’ In the afternoon, New England along with southeastern New York state, northern New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania may pick up isolated showers and thunderstorms.
