Intermodal volume growth has accelerated into double digits in recent weeks. Carriers leaning into it are learning fast that it isn't truckload ops with a different box.

Ramp scheduling, dray coordination, and transload exceptions all need their own workflow — and a team that's used to managing truckload doesn't automatically know how to manage that.
The carriers scaling into intermodal well are building ops support for it specifically, not bolting it onto the truckload team.

The load doesn't wait for business hours to go sideways.

It goes sideways at 7pm on a Thursday — and nobody's watching until Friday morning. By then the customer's already called twice, and the carrier's already found someone else to blame it on.

Most brokerages don't lack people. They lack someone watching the hours nobody wants to staff.

Most brokerage playbooks assume the opposite: spot is cheap, contract is safe. When that flips, carrier sales reps end up negotiating from the wrong side of the table.

The brokerages handling it well aren't panicking — they're re-pricing contracts faster than the market moves.

Generic VAs are built to be generalists. A logistics-specific pod already knows load boards, carrier sales workflows, and what an EDI exception actually means — and that shows up in the output, not the invoice.
