We’re making strategic investments toward the next generation of skilled maritime professionals.

Last month, the Port of Redwood City and San Mateo County Office of Education partnered up to host San Mateo County 11th and 12th grade students at the Port to provide early career exposure to real-world maritime pathways; ones that fuel the local economy and build a sustainable supply chain. βš“οΈπŸš’ These students heard from industry experts and explored hands-on activities to learn about the sea of growth opportunities available. ✨

The event was a reflection of our efforts to serve Silicon Valley by inspiring the future talent pipeline of maritime industry leaders.

Congratulations to our Sea Scouts and Mariner Scouts! βš“

Over Memorial Day weekend, scout units based at the Port of Redwood City earned top honors at the Ancient Mariner Regatta, one of the oldest and most respected Sea Scout competitions in the western United States.

Scouts competed in a range of nautical events, including:

πŸͺ’ Knot tying
⛡️ Sailing
⛑️ First aid
🧭 Navigation

Throughout the competition, participants demonstrated the leadership, teamwork and technical skills that are essential both on the water and in our communities

The Port has proudly served as home to scouting programs since 1928, helping connect generations of young people to maritime education, leadership development and hands-on learning opportunities. This year's competition highlights the impact of those programs, with several local scouts now preparing to pursue maritime careers.

These programs continue to create lasting value both on and beyond the waterfront. Congratulations to these scouts on an incredible achievement and for carrying this tradition of excellence forward.

What in the world is slag, and why does it matter?

It might sound unfamiliar, but it’s something you’ve probably benefited from every day.

πŸ”₯ Slag is a byproduct created during steel production
πŸͺ¨ Instead of going to waste, it’s recycled and repurposed
πŸ—οΈ It’s used in roads, concrete, and even bridges

The Port of Redwood City plays a key role in receiving and moving slag:
🚒 Ships bring it in, and it’s distributed for use across the region
πŸŒ‰ Slag helps build and maintain the infrastructure we rely on!
