Just a reminder that it's the time of year that cows are in their pasture along the trail. Please make sure the gates close behind you and please slow down a bit. The cows and calves are very friendly. Thanks everyone and enjoy the trail!

Tuesday Trail Tip: While there are a number of places to choose for lunch stops in Deadwood, Hill City, and Custer, you may be wondering about other places along the trail.

You can find food in Rochford, Pringle, and Edgemont as well.

Rochford's Moonshine Gulch Saloon is a must stop, even if you only take pictures. Rochford also has a small coffee truck and a small hot dog/steamburger stand at the c-store.

Pringle has a bar restaurant called Hitchrail. It's open Tuesday through Sunday in the summer.

Finally, Edgemont has a number of small restaurants on the Main Street right by the trailhead. There are also a couple of convenience stores out near the highway for incidentals.

Keep in mind it's always a good idea to carry snacks and treats with you while you're riding; just in case hunger strikes and you aren't near one of the towns that have food available.

Tuesday Trail Tip: Just a heads up if you are doing a 3-day trek. Logically people want to spend the night in Mystic because it's 1/3 of the way. Unfortunately there is little to no lodging between Deadwood and Hill City. There are a few airbnbs but keep in mind there is no food in that area other than lunch/dinner in Rochford. Most people either do the full ride from Deadwood to Hill City the first day or they'll have a shuttle pick them up in Mystic at the end of day one and then take them back to Mystic at the beginning of day two. We are very happy to provide that service.

Tuesday Trail Tip: Cell service is spotty at best on the Mickelson Trail. Your best bet to get a connection is at high elevations or in one of the towns along the way. As an added note, text messages will sometimes go even when you can't get a voice connection.

Tuesday Trail Tip: make sure you check the weather prior to your ride. Be prepared, the weather can change quickly; from morning till night, from a high elevation near Deadwood/Dumont of 6200 ft down to 3400 ft near Edgemont, from day to day. Dressing in layers is a good idea. Have a light piece of rain gear 'just in case.' Generally the trail is gorgeous, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Tuesday Trail Tip: Slow down when you're going through the tunnels on the Mickelson Trail. Be prepared to turn on your headlight or walk your bike through. Your eyes don't adjust right away and it can be dangerous. Watch out for rocks on the trail and other riders heading toward you.
