FORGOTTEN HISTORY...
Few are aware that New Kent County Airport is steward to a private cemetery on airport property. The burial plot consist of a male, female and female daughter. Identified per the existing headstones are the Reverend James F. Parkinson, (May 9, 1814-Sept. 6, 1880), his wife, Hanna D. Parkinson, (Williams; Nov. 20, 1822-Dec. 8, 1854) and their daughter, Christiana Dill Parkinson, (July 1, 1844-June 13, 1919).
For decades, the cemetery was abandoned, amongst the heavily-wooded area of airport property located southeast of today's runway. During that time period, the property known as home to the Parkinson family was referred to as, "Gum Spring". This per Malcolm Hart Harris, MD, author of, "Old New Kent County". This area was cleared of mature trees in 2012.
September of 2016, Ms. LaVonne Allen with the New Kent County African American Heritage Society reached out to airport staff in an effort to preserve this County historical landmark. Discussion and visits by Ms. Allen and her team were ongoing when Ms. Allen introduced Mr. Brian Whitehead, Scoutmaster for Quinton, VA. Scout Troop 562. Brian shared that Camden Trezza, a senior troop scout, expressed interest in the challenge of rehabilitation of the cemetery in order to achieve his Eagle Scout status.
Camden accepted the challenge with the support of fellow scouts and the investment of sweat equity. They accomplished the task in short order. Photos attached from 2011 and current photo show the then condition and current restoration. Airport staff maintains the cemetery currently. Many thanks to Camden, his troop and congratulations on achieving Eagle Scout!

A Belated Birthday...
Late June...BooYaa, SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER! Three neighboring girls, Kristi, Megan and Maddie, just wanna have fun! They started out on all fours, just joy-riding. But, physics and gravity intervened and overcame. Staff heard a commotion in the airport parking lot and attended to assist. In the best interest of the girls, County support was summoned. During the brief wait, staff chatted with the girls and learned that it was Kristi's birthday. What a bummer...SIXTEEN candles!
However, all turned out well. A few days later, staff began pondering the situation in an effort to brighten Kristi's not so bright birthday. Staff reached out to County support for contact information of the teen's parents. Due to privacy, County support could only reach out directly to the parents and request that they contact airport staff. Surprisingly, a few weeks later, Michelle, mother of two of the girls, made contact with staff. Staff shared with Michelle that in an effort to brighten Kristi's tarnished birthday, volunteers wanted to offer the three girls a local aircraft ride. All were in agreement but with the heat of summer, we would keep in touch and select a favorable date later in the year.
Well, later in the year has come and the inaugural flight took place, Thursday, December 26, 2024. Happy Belated 16th Birthday to Kristi! Pictured are Megan, Kristi, Michelle (Megan and Maddie's Mother) and John Noble, pilot. Just heartwarming! Cheers and Happy New Year!
