Some of the old timers and people I used to work with would say that an engine monitor just gives you useless information that will only make you worry about things that have always been there.

Today’s case is a client that had noticed that cylinder 4 on their 4 cylinder Lycoming had a much higher EGT on startup and during the run up when compared to the other cylinders. He visited several mechanics before coming to the shop. Several did borescope inspections and one staked the valve on two separate occasions. The last one to do the borescope inspection sent the images to an engine shop for assistance. The engine shop said the engine needed to be overhauled due to high time and the EGT issue! One of the mechanics suggested that maybe lapping the exhaust valve may help.

While researching valve lapping the aircraft owner came across an article by Mike Busch where I was mentioned and he decided to look me up.

We got to look at the airplane today. One of the things that stood out was the engine made a popping sound as it taxied up to the shop. More on that later.

After the engine cooled a little we got started on borescoping the cylinder. Everything about the cylinder looked typical for a 1600hr cylinder on a carbureted 4 cylinder.

After looking at the borescope photos we talked things over with the owner. Further discussion revealed that the high EGT was more related to low power than it was temperature. This is an important clue. Also of importance is the popping sound. Both of these issues suggest lean mixture at low power and normal mixture at high power. All hallmarks of an induction leak!

Visual inspection of the cylinder revealed that the intake coupling clamps were loose and there was fuel staining on the top of the intake tube. When we removed the tube to replace the fl**ge gasket we discovered there was a full gasket and a partial gasket installed at this fl**ge. The last time the tube was removed the technician failed to remove all of the old gasket.

We removed the old gasket material and installed a new gasket. During the post work engine run the EGT was now in line with the other cylinders, the engine ran smoother and there was no more popping sound.

As it turned out the engine monitor provided some valuable clues that prevented major engine work!

The prop cable housing is supposed to be retained by a fork on a bracket attached to the engine sump. The person who recently installed all new engine cables neglected to crimp the fork and didn’t wrap it with safety wire. Fortunately the engine and throttle cables had a loop of safety wire around them. Their forks were not crimped either. If the throttle or mixture comes out of the fork all function of the control is lost.
