🌊 Exciting news! Voters have approved Measure 26-243, supporting flood safety in northern Multnomah County!

This bond measure allows the Urban Flood Safety & Water Quality District to issue up to $150 million in bonds to upgrade and improve our century-old flood safety infrastructure along the Columbia River. This also unlocks an additional $100 million in federal matching funds!

The upgrades include levee improvements, pump stations, and flood walls, which will ultimately make our region more resilient to extreme weather and flooding. This means greater protection for our community and key assets like the Portland International Airport and our drinking water supply.

A big thank you to our board, staff, community members, and partners for your support and collaboration. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of these vital projects. Together, we’re building a safer, more resilient future! πŸ’§πŸ’ͺ

Weekend predictions include 3-4 inches of rainfall in the Willamette Valley, 6 inches in the Cascades, and accelerated snowmelt.

Take precautionary measures now:

During high water and heavy rain events, the Districts implement emergency action plans to keep levees and facilities functioning to protect life, property, and the environment. A few hours of preparation can make a big difference! 🌊πŸ’ͺ

Living and working in low-lying areas along the Columbia River means we benefit from local levees that reduce flood risks. However, remember that no levee offers complete protection, making it essential for each of us to be prepared. Taking a few hours to secure your home or workplace, creating an emergency kit, and planning for floods can be a game-changer.

πŸ’ΌπŸš— Have you heard of Go Kits? A Go Kit is a portable version of your home emergency kit that's ready to grab and go if you need to evacuate. Each person should have their own Go Kit, easily accessible for a swift departure.

πŸ‘πŸ“¦ Stay flood-prepared with a Go Kit and check out more helpful resources to prepare before a flood:

With awareness of hazards, and a plan for your loved ones, gathering supplies for your kits can be easy.

A system of flood-control infrastructure β€” hidden in plain sight β€” protects our region from major disasters. The 27-mile levee system along the Columbia River protects airports, homes, businesses, and critical services. This flood safety system is nearly 100 years old and no longer meets federal standards for flood protection.

In a changing climate, the Portland area faces major flood risks along the Columbia River. Major floods likely would cost lives, pollute our drinking water and environment, and affect tens of thousands of jobs. Vulnerable communities in the flood zone would be hardest hit.

By acting now, we can protect lives, homes, jobs, environmental quality, and save millions of dollars down in flood clean up and recovery. Congress authorized nearly $100 million for needed improvements, as long as we provide a local match. We must act now during this window of opportunity to take advantage of these federal funds.

Please take our survey to help us understand community priorities and levels of support for flood safety investments! This survey will help shape the final bond measure that is referred to Multnomah County voters: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/fscr2024
