Walter Greene 1944-2024
It is with sadness that we have to tell the community of the passing of our friend and mentor, Walter, after a very long fight with Parkinson’s. He was tough, and stubborn to the end, and beat it longer than anyone might have imagined. He was surrounded by family when he sailed gently over the horizon.
Walter’s impact on the multihull building and sailing community cannot be overstated. At a time when it was possible to innovate and create on a small budget, with simpler technology, in a small shop or back yard, he and Joan - his partner of 55 years, in building, sailing, business, and life - along with a few others, led a revolution in ocean racing. His A Capella, with which he and his wife Joan won the 1978 Round Britain, then Mike Birch won the first Route du Rhum, launched the careers of both men. There quickly followed Phil Weld’s Moxie, Eric Loizeau’s Gauloises 4, more A Capellas, and then larger tris and catamarans from the little shop on the Cousins River in Yarmouth, ME. He influenced many designers, builders, and sailors, especially young French folks, who passed through Greene Marine to learn from Walter – always a willing teacher – , a large number of whom went on to laudable careers of their own.
Within this group, some of those boats are still sailed, raced, and lovingly cared for, an honor he recognized and appreciated. He was happiest sailing, experimenting, and “simply messing about in boats.”
He is missed by all who sailed with him, learned from him, and were his friends.
C'est avec chagrin que nous devons annoncer à la communauté le décès de notre ami et mentor, Walter, après une très longue lutte contre la maladie de Parkinson. Il a fait preuve de ténacité et d'obstination jusqu'à la fin, et l'a vaincu plus longtemps que l'on aurait pu l'imaginer. Il était entouré de sa famille lorsqu'il s'est éloigné doucement de l'horizon.
On ne saurait trop insister sur l'impact de Walter sur la communauté des constructeurs et des navigateurs de multicoques . À une époque où il était possible d'innover et de créer avec un petit budget, avec une technologie plus simple, dans un petit atelier ou une arrière-cour, lui et Joan - sa partenaire depuis 55 ans, dans la construction, la navigation, les affaires et la vie - avec quelques autres, ont mené une révolution dans la course au large. Son A Capella, avec lequel lui et sa femme Joan ont remporté le Round Britain 1978, puis Mike Birch la première Route du Rhum, a lancé la carrière des deux hommes. Suivirent rapidement le Moxie de Phil Weld, Gauloises 4 d'Eric Loizeau, d'autres A Capella, puis des tris et des catamarans plus grands à partir du petit atelier situé sur la rivière Cousins à Yarmouth, ME. Il a influencé de nombreux concepteurs, constructeurs et marins, en particulier de jeunes Français, qui sont passés par Greene Marine pour apprendre auprès de Walter - toujours prêt à enseigner - et dont un grand nombre ont poursuivi une carrière louable.
Au sein de ce groupe, certains de ces bateaux naviguent encore, participent à des courses et sont entretenus avec amour, un honneur qu'il reconnaissait et appréciait. Il était le plus heureux en naviguant, en expérimentant et en « simply messing about in boats ».
Il manquera à tous ceux qui ont navigué avec lui, qui ont appris de lui et qui étaient ses amis.
