Haven Boatworks, LLC, located in Port Townsend, WA, is a full service boatyard including engine sales, service and repair. We work on both commercial and pleasure craft, from small runabouts to the largest vessel that can be hauled by the Port of Port Townsend’s 300-ton Travelift. We have dealerships with John Deere, Volvo, Yanmar, Northern Lights, Westerbeke, and Universal for new diesel engines and generator sales, including installation.

The (almost) full process of how we replace a plank on wooden boats

The hull of a wooden boat is made up of many planks butted next to one another. So, what keeps water from leaking between the planks? After planks are fit, cotton or oakum are driven into the seams of each plank using caulking irons and a caulking mallet. The cotton is driven with so much force that it can actually move the planking. Once the boat is launched, the planks will begin to absorb water and expand, crushing the cotton and creating a water tight seal between each plank. This process is called “taking up.”
