Rockfish en Croûte

We mixed things up baking fresh Lapush-caught black rockfish in puff pastry with chopped chantrelles, onions, and cilantro in a creamy white sauce.

Will certainly be slinging this to folks at the table again! 😁

Wednesday Tackle Tip

Wrapping up for the season, one of the things I do is try to extend the serviceable life of our shrimp and crab gear.

All it takes is a thorough cleaning to remove debris, silt, and bait residue (pressure washing works great for the prep) and a touch up application of a rubberized coating once the pots have completely dried.

This year I went with some leftover spray truck bed liner, undercarriage coating, and a good old can of Flex Seal out in the sunshine before stacking for winter.

When you only get single digit days of opportunity each year, might as well do what we can to reduce the benjamins per ounce equation, right?! 😀

Cheers! - Wet Dog Boats Crew

Today marks the end of the 2026 summer Puget Sound crab season. Don't worry if you missed it though - the Area 6 winter crab season is anticipated to open in early October! In the meantime, there's still opportunity to rent a boat and gear to go chase hard fighting coho salmon or delicious halibut between now and early October though (halibut closes at the end of September).

We're also available for DIY coastal tours and guided family outings if fishing isn't on your to-do list.

Call, email, or check out portangelesboats.com for rates and info and keep an eye on our Wet Dog Boats page for upcoming specials!

September Flavors - Halibut and Lobster
Enchiladas (Local halibut and wild lobster mushrooms that is!)

Our onions, peppers, and tomatoes for this meal were even home grown!

Halibut Season should be open through the end of the month and coho fishing continues into early October. Those harvest opportunities combined with the flat water and lighter boat traffic typically seen in September offer a good chance at some end of the season fun!

Hit us up if you want to grab a boat and gear to catch and cook up your own local-caught seafood!

Peaceful Sunday evening collecting one of our rental boats from Lake Sutherland!
We're looking forward to squeezing in a few kokanee trips in the next month or so as things settle down, projects get finished, and the water starts to cool.

August Mackerel - Love em or Hate em?

Plenty of folks seem to despise these "good fer nuthin' - taste like garbage - the cat won't even touch em - worthless - only good for bait" - fish.

While they don't really put up a fight when you hook them, we've taken delight in adding a few to our icy cold fish box every year they show up.

Turning them into decent tablefare can be a fussy endeavor, but if you do it "right" they can actually be quite delicious.

A few things we've found to be key:
▪︎ Bonk, bleed, and ice immediately
▪︎ Skin the fillets, cut out the pinbone line (center of fillet), and carefully trim off the dark meat/bloodline/fat
▪︎ Cook small pieces hot and fast. Instead of trying to do a whole fillet, try searing or blackening smaller strips (sea salt and butter in a skillet leaving the fish a little rare on the inside is pretty good).
▪︎ Try making ceviche. Cured overnight in a medley of lime, cilantro, peppers, onion, tomato, black pepper, and sea salt - this rubbish fish might actually bend your mind!
