Tri-Rail is Southeast Florida’s commuter rail line, which extends 72 miles from Miami to Mangonia Park with a total of 18 stations. The name refers to the three counties through which the line passes: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. It is operated by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, an agency of the State of Florida. Tri-Rail had its origins when, in 1989 it began to operat

e as a temporary commuter rail service while construction crews widened Interstate 95 and the parallel Florida’s Turnpike. In 2003, the Florida Legislature transformed the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority (Tri-Rail) into the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA). The Authority was created with a vision to provide greater mobility in South Florida, thereby improving the economic viability and quality of life of the community, region and state. The Authority’s mission is to coordinate, develop and implement a viable regional transportation system in South Florida that endeavors to meet the desires and needs for the movement of people, goods and services. The SFRTA currently operates Tri-Rail, which spans Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. Additional regional services may be added in the future. As you may have heard us mention, SFRTA not only maintains the 73.5-mile South Florida Rail Corridor where Tri-Rail, CSX Transportation, and Amtrak operate, but also an additional 54 miles of freight service spur tracks.

Recently, our team completed rail infrastructure improvements at the NW 22nd Ave. crossing in Miami as part of a roadway surface rehabilitation project. The work included rail cutting, a flowable fill pour, installation of a precast concrete tub grade crossing, and the addition of a dynamic envelope.

Concrete tub grade crossings provide a durable, stable surface for vehicles while maintaining proper rail alignment. Designed for high-traffic locations, they offer a smoother ride, reduce long-term maintenance, and enhance safety for both roadway users and rail operations.

These upgrades make the crossing safer for drivers, pedestrians, and trains alike, while helping ensure the continued safe and efficient movement of both passenger and freight rail service throughout South Florida. 🚆🚧
