7 things I ACTUALLY do when planning a big family vacation 👌🏽
1️⃣ I start planning early
Big trips take time. Our next big trip is in October, but I started planning back in July. Starting early gives me more options, more flexibility, and more time to save.
2️⃣ I plan the trip backwards
I don’t pick a destination first. I look at timing, budget, and what we want out of the trip, THEN choose a place that makes sense.
3️⃣ I set a realistic budget
Flights, lodging, food, transportation, excursions, spending money, pet sitters… it all adds up quickly. I want to know the real number upfront and include EVERYTHING in my travel budget.
4️⃣ I check the best time to visit
Weather, crowds, and local holidays matter. U.S. vacation season doesn’t always line up with the best time to go elsewhere.
5️⃣ I check the best time to book
Prices change a lot. Sometimes booking early saves money, sometimes waiting does. I watch trends, set pricing alerts, and look for upcoming sales before committing to any major travel booking.
6️⃣ I research alternative travel options
Sometimes a cruise is cheaper than flying and booking a hotel. Sometimes an Airbnb makes the most sense. I compare everything and adjust as needed.
7️⃣ I use points, cash-back, and deals
From airline miles to hotel points, from debit card offers for cash-back to loyalty member discounts when I book through certain places…. I check everything, and sometimes ending up saving hundreds 👌🏽
