We just wrapped up a great meeting with Gunnar from Assemblymember Hart’s office to discuss the slate of e-bike bills currently making their way through the California legislature.
Of the many bills, our biggest concern is AB 1557, which would restrict Class 1 & 2 e-bikes to 250W motors. We had an honest conversation about the real-world differences in motor sizes and why a 250W motor simply isn’t enough for many riders trying to get up hills, carry cargo, or maintain independence and mobility.
We also discussed what seems to be the core issue: enforcement. Existing laws already address unsafe and illegal riding behavior, but instead of targeting the bad actors, this bill risks limiting safe, responsible adults who rely on e-bikes to get outside, commute, exercise, and stay mobile.
Thank you Gunnar! We appreciate you taking the time to visit, listen, and have a thoughtful conversation about the future of e-bikes in California. Productive discussions like this matter.
