🎓🍔 A lesson in perseverance from Dave Thomas 🍔🎓

On this day in 1993... Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, was already a hugely successful businessman—but there was one thing that still mattered deeply to him. As a high school dropout who became a burger mogul, he worried that his story might send the wrong message to young people about the importance of education.

So at age 60, Dave Thomas went back and earned his GED diploma, proving that it’s never too late to finish what you started. When he completed the program, local high school seniors even voted him “Most Likely to Succeed.”

Thomas later became a national spokesperson encouraging others to earn their GED, reminding people everywhere that success isn’t just about achievement—it’s also about setting the right example and continuing to grow.

Sometimes the greatest accomplishment isn’t building a business empire—it’s showing others that learning and perseverance never go out of style. 💪📚

‘OK’ enters national vernacular

In 1839, the abbreviation “OK” (or “O.K.”) first appeared in print in the Boston Morning Post, marking the beginning of what would become one of the most widely recognized words in the world. Originally used as a humorous abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a playful misspelling of “all correct,” the term quickly caught on.

What started as a newspaper joke soon spread across the country, helped along by politics, advertising, and everyday conversation. Over time, “OK” became a universal way to say something is acceptable, agreed upon, or simply good enough.

Today, “OK” is used in countless languages around the globe—proof that sometimes the simplest words can have the biggest impact. 👍

🌟 Remembering Mister Rogers 🌟

Few people have touched as many lives with kindness and compassion as Fred Rogers—known to generations simply as Mister Rogers. Born in 1928, he became a beloved television host, educator, and minister whose gentle voice and thoughtful lessons helped children understand the world around them.

Through his groundbreaking program, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, he spent more than three decades teaching young viewers about empathy, feelings, respect, and the importance of being yourself. His calm, sincere approach created a safe place where children felt seen, heard, and valued.

When Fred Rogers passed away in 2003, the world lost a remarkable teacher and role model—but his message continues to live on: that kindness matters, everyone has value, and being a good neighbor can change the world.

As Mister Rogers often reminded us: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” 🧡

🚗 On this day in history: A turning point for Studebaker

In 1933, the Studebaker Corporation—one of America’s oldest and most respected automakers—entered receivership after struggling under heavy debt during the depths of the Great Depression. The company’s president, Albert Erskine, resigned amid the crisis, and later that year tragically died by su***de.

Despite the devastating setback, Studebaker did not disappear. The company reorganized and eventually rebounded, returning to production and continuing to build innovative and stylish automobiles for decades. Cars like the futuristic Avanti and sleek 1950s coupes showed that the company still had creativity and engineering talent.

While Studebaker ultimately left the automobile business in 1966, this moment in 1933 marked one of the most dramatic chapters in the company’s long history—showing both the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the resilience that allowed the company to continue for another generation. 🚗📜

U.S. Military Academy Established

The United States Military Academy—the first military school in the United States—is founded by Congress for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. Located at West Point, New York, the U.S. Military Academy is often simply known as West Point.

Located on the high west bank of New York’s Hudson River, West Point was the site of a Revolutionary-era fort built to protect the Hudson River Valley from British attack. In 1780, Patriot General Benedict Arnold, the commander of the fort, agreed to surrender West Point to the British in exchange for 6,000 pounds. However, the plot was uncovered before it fell into British hands, and Arnold fled to the British for protection.

U.S. Army launches K-9 Corps

On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or “K-9 Corps.”

Well over a million dogs served on both sides during World War I, carrying messages along the complex network of trenches and providing some measure of psychological comfort to the soldiers. The most famous dog to emerge from the war was Rin Tin Tin, an abandoned puppy of German war dogs found in France in 1918 and taken to the United States, where he made his film debut in the 1922 silent film The Man from Hell’s River. As the first bona fide animal movie star, Rin Tin Tin made the little-known German Shepherd breed famous across the country.

On March 11, 1997, Paul McCartney, a former member of the most successful rock band in history, The Beatles, is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his “services to music.” The 54-year-old from Liverpool became Sir Paul in a centuries-old ceremony of pomp and solemnity at Buckingham Palace in central London. Fans waited outside in a scene reminiscent of Beatlemania of the 1960s. Crowds screamed as McCartney swept through the gates in his limousine and he answered with a thumbs-up.

McCartney’s wife, Linda, who was fighting breast cancer, did not accompany him, but three of their four children were at the palace. “I would have loved the whole family to be here, but when we heard there were only three tickets, we had to draw straws,” McCartney said. Linda McCartney would succumb to cancer 13 months later on April 17, 1998.

⚖️✨ On this day in history: Charlotte E. Ray makes history ✨⚖️

In 1872, Charlotte E. Ray graduated from Howard University School of Law, becoming the first Black woman to earn a law degree and practice law in the United States. At a time when both racism and sexism created nearly insurmountable barriers, her achievement was nothing short of groundbreaking.

Ray was admitted to the D.C. Bar and opened her own law practice, blazing a trail for generations of women and people of color in the legal profession. Though her career was limited by the discrimination of the era, her courage and determination helped open doors that had long been closed.

Today, we honor Charlotte E. Ray as a true pioneer whose legacy continues to inspire the pursuit of justice, equality, and opportunity for all.

🥊 On this day in history: A young Muhammad Ali shocks the world 🥊

In 1964, a brash, confident 22-year-old Muhammad Ali—then still known as Cassius Clay—stunned the boxing world by defeating Sonny Liston to win his first world heavyweight championship. Few gave the underdog a chance, but Ali’s speed, skill, and unshakable belief in himself proved everyone wrong.

The victory didn’t just crown a new champion—it introduced the world to a larger-than-life figure who would go on to change sports, culture, and history. That night marked the beginning of the legend: bold, fearless, and destined for greatness.

“I am the greatest” wasn’t just talk—it was prophecy. 🥊👑
