๐ŸŒ Travel with Purpose. Connect with Culture.

Some destinations offer more than beautiful viewsโ€”they tell powerful stories of resilience, heritage, and community. From the historic castles of Ghana to the vibrant streets of Harlem, the soulful rhythms of New Orleans, the Afro-Brazilian traditions of Salvador, and the rich culture of Charleston, these places invite travelers to experience Black history in meaningful ways.

At The Green Book Institute/Experience, we believe travel can educate, inspire, and deepen our understanding of the people and places that have shaped our world.

Happy Sunday! It's time for our first Historic Destination Spotlight.

๐Ÿ“ Stop #1: The Lorraine Motel | Memphis, Tennessee

As Featured in The Negro Motorist Green Book, the Lorraine Motel was more than just a place to stay, it was a welcoming refuge for Black travelers during segregation, offering safety, comfort, and dignity at a time when those were far from guaranteed.

The motel became a defining landmark in American history on April 4, 1968, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while standing on its second-floor balcony. Today, the site has been preserved as the National Civil Rights Museum, where visitors can explore the history of the Civil Rights Movement, reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought for equality, and honor Dr. King's enduring legacy.

As we continue to celebrate the places that shaped Black travel and American history, the Lorraine Motel reminds us why preserving these stories matters.

Have you ever visited the Lorraine Motel, or is it on your travel bucket list? Tell us in the comments!

Did You Know?

Victor Hugo Green, the creator of The Negro Motorist Green Book, worked as a postal worker before publishing the guide. His job allowed him to connect with postal workers across the country, who helped identify safe places for Black travelers to stay, eat, and refuel.

His network helped turn a small guide into one of the most trusted travel resources of its time.
