Planning another delivery... Where to next?
We cast off slow at dawn
With crates and prayer and bread
The pier fell back behind us
Like a dream we’d almost said
The mast bit through the morning
The deck kept time in oak
Salt on our sleeves and collars
Blue gulls circling the smoke
And the coast went thin
Then slipped away
The line between us
And the day
Rock me on the water
Rock me home
Rock me on the water
Let me roam
Stars over the rigging
Silver and slow
Rock me on the water
Till I go
We watched the finches vanish
From one green cliff of pine
Saw kelp comb through the foam
Like dark hair in a line
The sea laid down its breathing
Long swells, easy, low
Winds ran cool through canvas
And taught the ropes to glow
And every night
The sky grew wide
A black glass harbor
Full of light
Rock me on the water
Rock me home
Rock me on the water
Let me roam
Stars over the rigging
Silver and slow
Rock me on the water
Till I go
At midnight the moon spilled out
On every waking wave
We lay there wrapped in blankets
As if the sea were brave
No clock, no chase, no sorrow
Only breath and foam
The gulls slept in the darkness
And the tide sang us a home
Rock me on the water
Rock me home
Rock me on the water
Let me roam
Stars over the rigging
Silver and slow
Rock me on the water
Rock me on the water
Till I go
