President Lincoln’s grandfather was born on this day, May 13, 1744 — and today, his grave tells a remarkable frontier story behind one of America’s most famous families.

Captain Abraham Lincoln, a pioneer farmer and Revolutionary War veteran, was killed in 1786 during an attack near his Kentucky homestead. His young son Thomas survived, later becoming the father of Abraham Lincoln.

On this day in 1821, John C. Breckinridge was born. A Kentucky native, Breckinridge became the youngest Vice President in U.S. history, later served as a U.S. senator, and ultimately sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War as a general and Secretary of War. His life reflects the deep political and moral fractures that led to America’s deadliest conflict.
