President Lincoln’s grandfather was born on this day, May 13, 1744 — and today, his grave tells a remarkable frontier story behind one of America’s most famous families.

Captain Abraham Lincoln, a pioneer farmer and Revolutionary War veteran, was killed in 1786 during an attack near his Kentucky homestead. His young son Thomas survived, later becoming the father of Abraham Lincoln.

You can visit Captain Abraham Lincoln’s grave at Long Run Baptist Church Cemetery near Louisville, a small but powerful stop tied to the family story behind the 16th president.

On this day in 1821, John C. Breckinridge was born.
