The North American P-51 Mustang, perhaps the most iconic aircraft of the war, the North American P-51 Mustang, was designed and built in response to a British request for a fighter aircraft. Only 102 days after the contract was signed, the first aircraft was completed. Originally designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine, common in orhter American aircraft types, it was the Rolls-Royce Merlin (built by Packard as the V-1650) which would catapult the Mustang to stardom. When coupled with drop-tanks, the Mustang was capable of escorting American bomers on long missions over Germany. These missions, which would match American pilots against the Luftwaffe's finest pilots, were battles the Americans were equipped to win in the Mustang.
The CAF's P-51D GUnfighter, is flown by the Gunfighter Sponsor Group.

The P51 is what the new experimental Midget Mustang 1 and 2 were designed after, both are very strong, excellent kitplanes, a friend of mine has one, and I have gotten to fly his (He has the Mustang 2), they are similar to the RV 6, and RV7, though there are many more RV's out there, there is one factor that seems to make the Mustang 2 better then the RV, and that is the position/design of the landing gear on the Mustang 2 is mounted to the main spar of the wing, where on the RV6 it's mounted on the firewall.
