Wandering in Asia & Beyond We curate sophisticated small-group and custom-made private tours. Tailored to you. ✨ 20 years ago I marveled at the mysterious Angkor Wat.

I am still roaming around there trying to unlock its mysteries. Being originally a historian I am researching the Angkorian Culture’s secrets and guiding small groups around Southeast Asia to share all the wonders of this amazing region.

Pchum Ben: The Festival of the Ancestors (Part 2) 🌾✨
The morning is bustling at the monastery! Families arrive from near and far, carrying containers of home-cooked rice, vegetable dishes, and fish. By feeding the monks, they believe they are sending blessings directly to the spirits of their ancestors. Worshippers carry lotus flowers and incense to offer to the Buddha. Those who don't bring cooked food arrive with entire cartons of water, soft drinks, or beautifully wrapped gift packages containing robes, biscuits, and canned goods for the monastery. Community members cook all through the night to prepare baba—a warm, thin rice porridge with chicken. Anyone who is hungry grabs a bowl to enjoy after the morning ceremonies. Families carefully lay the tables beneath decorated dining tents. Offering food to the monks is a fundamental way to accumulate Buddhist merit. The monks finish their lunch strictly before noon.
Once the monks leave, the pots come out for everyone else! Local children gather with bags, and a community lunch begins.
The menu is packed with traditional Khmer flavors:
• Somlor machu prolit: A sour fish soup with lotus stems.
• Nhoam Svay Trey Ang: A fresh green mango salad with grilled spiced fish.
• Prahok: A classic fermented fish paste served with fresh cucumber and eggplant.
• No Pchum Ben lunch is complete without num ansam chrouk (a sticky-rice roll filled with pork fat and bean paste) or num ansam cheik (the sweet, banana-filled version). Wrapping these tightly in a single banana leaf takes serious skill, so many people buy them from busy market vendors.

Pchum Ben (ភ្ជុំបិណ្ឌ), the Festival of the Ancestors, is one of the most important celebrations for Cambodian Buddhists. Pchum means to gather together, while ben refers to a special ball made from sticky rice. According to Cambodian beliefs, the gates to the otherworld open during these fifteen days, allowing the spirits of the ancestors to return to the world of the living.
The spirits of our ancestors must be remembered, going back seven generations. People fear that spirits left hungry may curse their descendants with poor harvests or infertility so that the living will share in their suffering. The first fourteen days make up a preparatory period known as Kan Ben, while the fifteenth and final day is Pchum Ben itself. While the rituals of offering gifts to the monks are similar throughout, the ceremonies on the final day take place with almost all of the monks present continuously.
This weekend marks the official Pchum Ben weekend for this year. During the festival in 2025, I visited four pagodas in the city of Siem Reap—Wat Enkosa, Wat Damnak, Wat Prom Roth, and Wat Polanka—as well as one rural pagoda, Wat Tep Pranam. Over the next few days, I will be presenting these events in several parts. Stay tuned!
