A few reminders for our Alcan clients…
These are all covered with in your contract and on our website at www.otratalaska.com, though we’ve allowed exceptions that we will no longer be able to.
We require a Deposit and Contract to secure your reservation.
Deposits are non refundable.
Deposits are transferable with prior consent and new contract.
Rolling a deposit to another load requires at least 2 weeks notice so we can re-book that stall, if the reservation isn’t absorbed by another client, deposits revert to non refundable, rolled deposits require a new contract.
We require 3 copies of documents, each border will retain a copy and one stays with your horse.
Preparation of travel documents is the responsibility of the owner and must accompany the animal(s) at the time of pick up/load.
There is a $50 fee for printing or copies needing made.
Canadian purchases require the use of a customs broker by the purchaser. Your customs broker will issue an Ace manifest to enter the USA and a veterinary inspection by a USDA accredited vet is required before we can release.
We require a flat halter, whether nylon or leather, and a useable and removable lead rope without knots.
Rope halters are prohibited on our trailers.
We will not haul a sedated, Aced, or drugged horse of any kind on long haul loads.
If your horse isn’t halter trained and handleable we require it be hauled in a fully enclosed box stall to be compliant with Canada’s humane transport protocols. Safe loading options must be available at load location (chute, panels etc) We cannot unload a horse that doesn’t lead, and a standing stall or California stall isn’t large enough for that long of a journey without movement.
Stallions must be disclosed up front so that safety and distance for all horses aboard can be prepared and accommodated for.
We are not a moving freight company. We expect one tack or feed box when arranged and typically do not account for multiple. There may be loads with space or roof options, but please do not assume and send 6 totes with your horse without first checking with us. There is a weight and size limit to your tote. And totes are charged $50 each.
We cannot haul injured, emaciated or disabled animals on standard multi day loads, we do have special at-risk health charters available for these kinds of movements with more space and more frequent layovers.
On The Road Again cannot assume liability of infection or catastrophic illness on the road for horses with preexisting at-risk issues.
Injuries to our drivers, handlers or equipment for undisclosed reasons/issues will be at the liability of the owner.
Wait time is charged by the hour with a 30 minute minimum.
After decades of serving our Alaskan friends and neighbors, we’ve taken on all sorts liability and risk, overlooking many hazards, we will no longer turn a blind eye.
Bear in mind that on the same load as a $500 auction horse or a $1500 ranch raised horse, there could be a $50,000 or $100,000 or more show or performance horse as well.
Our responsibility to each animal regardless of the value never differs.
And lastly the fuel surcharge is still in effect as of now with the average cost per gallon of diesel at $7 and higher as we travel north, up to $10 a gallon in some places in the Yukon. We hope to see Canada catch up with the downward trend by the end of this haul season.
