Last week's snow made for the perfect background for our train to pass through. She sure is a sight to see! None of it would be possible without your support. On this Christmas Day, we are most thankful for the gift of your patronage and ridership!

A Christmas train looks better in the snow.

Special thanks to Phil V. of Pontiac who shared with us this video from last weekend of the 310 leading the train back into Owosso. He happened to be passing through and by chance caught the train at a crossing. "Those whitewalls sure make it pop!"

Our family of current and former volunteers and long-time members were deeply saddened the other day from the news of the passing of our machinist Norbert Weber. He had a true passion for his work. He was a committed but kind individual who didn't mind taking the time to teach others. We pray for his family and ask for guidance and understanding in this turn of events. His contributions were many and he helped make our team in the shop a force to be reckoned with. As many of you know, a lot of the parts that go on the 1225 and the rest of our equipment may not be manufactured anymore, so it is up to us to make our own parts. Norbert was therefore integral to keeping things moving, no matter how small the part. He will be sorely missed. Our family will never forget him. Rest easy, Brother! https://www.borekjennings.com/obituary/Norbert-Weber?fbclid=IwAR3MI8SUL13_Ib3kUw2Ovg2QOj0gfnSVvcJUEft9TWA9yl0ezuOQm8YaQmk

Over the past week the decision was made by the Village of Ashley to cancel the Country Christmas for 2020. As such, given the current situation with reopening in the state of Michigan, we cannot run any excursions. Right now, we are dependent on our fans more than ever for their support. Please help us by going to michigansteamtrain.com and donate to our cause. The SRI is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. We appreciate your support and patience in this difficult time.

Some of you may already be aware that we made some purchases at an Amtrak auction last year. We had great success with two of those acquisitions during NPE 2019 with the two former Santa Fe hi level lounge cars which ran until recently on Amtrak's Coast Starlight train as "Pacific Parlour" cars. We were very pleased with the response to our "Pere Marquette Parlour" service! That makes us excited to say that we got two more arrivals from Amtrak: two single level heritage diners! The first arrival, Amtrak 8532, is now in the shop. It was originally a coach built by the Budd Company and dubbed "Silver Halter" for the CB&Q. It was sold to Amtrak in 1971 and became a dining car in the late 80s. Unfortunately, this car was heavily tagged on Amtrak's property and will need extensive exterior cleaning.
The second arrival, Amtrak 8550 awaits its turn in the shop. It was also built by the Budd Company in the 50s. It originally ran as a diner on the Northern Pacific Railway between Chicago and Seattle. In 1971 it was sold to Amtrak and, like 8532, has served as a diner on many of the eastern long-distance routes. This car also has some tagging on the outside, but will not require as much effort to remove it, thankfully. The wheels are turning in 2020!

From all of us here at the Steam Railroading Institute, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
