Attention Shiawassee County Seniors and Families

Important Notice:
Temporary Covered Senior Hours Trial Run

The Shiawassee Council on Aging (SCOA), in partnership with Shiawassee Area Transportation Agency (SATA), is temporarily expanding its covered daily service hours to better serve our community.

Starting September 28, 2026 through November 20, 2026, the daily hours paid for by the Shiawassee Council on Aging for senior citizens (individuals aged 60 and above) through a specialized services grant are temporarily expanding:
• Current Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
• New Temporary Hours: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

SCOA is covering the cost to senior citizens for two additional hours each day to provide additional flexibility, support, and access to appointments and services. Our commitment to keeping our independent senior community safe, active, and supported remains our top priority.

If you have any questions about how this temporary shift impacts your specific services or activities, please contact the Shiawassee Council on Aging at 989-723-8875.

To schedule transportation, please contact
Shiawassee Area Transportation Agency at 989-729-2687.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we adapt to serve you better.

Vernon Township Discontinuation of SATA Participation
For over 17 years Shiawassee Area Transportation Agency (SATA) has proudly transported residents of Vernon Township to medical appointments, social service events and activities, grocery stores, pharmacies, schools and trainings, and many other destinations as participating governmental unit members. This was done because Vernon Township committed to contribute general funds to SATA, making the municipality a participating governmental unit.
It is with great disappointment that we announce that the Vernon Township Board has voted to discontinue township funding for SATA, effective October 1, 2026. This decision reflects the Vernon Township Board’s determination that it is no longer feasible to sustain transportation funding through the Vernon Township general fund. Additionally, the Vernon Township Board has decided that they will not move forward with a ballot proposal.
We understand the hardship this puts on riders who rely on SATA for daily independence and quality of life, whether it be you, your family members, or your neighbors, and suggest that you contact the Vernon Township Board and express how this change will impact you.
Beginning October 1, 2026, Vernon Township residents, as members of a non-participating local governmental unit, will be charged the regular fare of $9.00 per one-way trip, and $4.50 per one-way trip for passengers 18 or younger, 60 or older, and those with ADA-defined disabilities. Additionally, residents of non-participating governmental units may only schedule rides the day before or the day of the requested trip and may not schedule recurring rides.
SATA thanks the Vernon Township Board for its partnership over the years, and the residents of Vernon Township for your continued support and loyalty to our transportation service. We look forward to continuing to serve you as non-participating members and hope to once again work with you as participating members in the future.
