🛩Fun opportunity for the family
🗓Friday (6/5) and Saturday (6/6) the Ottawa Kansas Municipal Airport will host an aerobatics competition from approximately 10 am - 3 pm each day. The public is invited to watch (for free). Parking is available in the public lot or in the grass right off the paved road. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, pack snacks or lunch and enjoy the show! Planes from all over the country will be performing in this exciting competition.

ℹ Please note the competition is dependent on the weather and there will be a break in the action for lunch.

KOWI had a unique visitor on Saturday night, but not the kind you want to see come in. The crew owes their life to the quick thinking pilot who, even though struck in the helmet by the bird, found the nearest airport and landed them safely. The the official report from First Responders is below:

Saturday, February 28, 2026, an Air Methods Life Saver 21 air ambulance was enroute from KU Medical Center to Emporia, Kansas. Approximately 12 miles north of Ottawa, the craft was involved in a bird strike. The strike took out the entire windscreen on the pilot’s side and hit the fuel shut off switch.

The pilot was able to regain control and make a safe, emergency landing at Ottawa Municipal Airport at approximately 12:40 am. No injuries were reported in this incident, and no patients were on board this flight."
Some of the damage taken the next morning. The mechanics were there on Sunday morning installing a new windshield.

Has anyone ever driven to Cheyenne Wyoming from Ottawa? It's a lovely 10 hour, almost 700 mile drive? Not only does it include a few pit stops, you're also rewarded with a wind blown cross country on I-70, all of the craziness that defines Denver area traffic, and bumper to bumper semi traffic all the way to Cheyenne.
Or you could do it in 2 hours and 9 minutes in yesterday's unique visitor to KOWI.
This Honda Jet HA 420 flew in yesterday and the passengers attended an event at Ottawa University. It will be leaving today for the 2-hour flight home.
For those airplane Geeks out there, Honda HA 420 carry six people including two crew members, has a 1500 mile range, and cruises at 422 mph. It was built in 2017. It's powered by two HF 120 turbine fan engines that produce 2050 lbf each.

This family was flying into Lawrence to see friends. The airport in Lawrence was fogged in, so they stopped here to refuel and wait until the fog lifted. They spent about 3 hours here, using the courtesy car to go get something to eat. They had lots of compliments on our town and our Airport. They are from Switzerland, the husband is a commercial pilot who flies an Airbus throughout Europe. They were on a two-week tour of the US starting in Orlando where they rented the plane and finishing up back to Orlando. You just don't know who you'll meet at KOWI!
