The one door on your Disney cruise that keeps most parents up at night.

It isn’t the cabin door.
It’s the verandah door.

A mom messaged me two weeks before her sailing.
Her son is 3, has autism, and is a little escape artist.
He’s drawn to open spaces and the sound of the ocean.
She said, “Kay, I’m still terrified of the balcony.”

Here’s what I told her.

Every Disney Cruise Line verandah door has a second safety lock up high, well out of reach of little hands.
On the Disney Wish, Treasure, and Destiny, you’ll find it at the top of the door.
On the Fantasy, Dream, Wonder, and Magic, it looks a little different but works the same way.
Once it’s engaged, the door stays closed.
No guessing. No hovering all night.

That one detail changed her whole trip.
She actually slept.

If you’re traveling with toddlers or planning special needs travel, here’s my checklist:

1. Test the high lock the moment you walk into your stateroom.
2. If anything feels off, call Guest Services right away.
3. Make engaging the lock part of your nightly routine.
4. Keep chairs and the table away from the railing. Little climbers are clever.
5. Close the curtains at night- out of sight, out of mind.
6. Bring a familiar comfort item so the room feels like home on day one.

For families with sensory needs, the verandah can also be a gift.
Fresh air. Quiet. A calm retreat away from the crowds.
