How can one become OTR driver in U.S.?

Truck driver is hard, but very well paid and demanded job in all the States. Working as a long haul truck driver is not about vehicle driving skills only.

1. CLP should be obtained first to proceed with CDL class A, as it grants you a right to demonstrate your driving skills.

This will be followed by Pre-trip Inspection test.

2. Additional courses can be taken voluntarily to obtain a licence to carry hazardous cargo.

3. The final step is to find a company in need for hauliers' services. Nowadays, it is not an issue.

By working hard for our company as 1099 contractors do, you can earn up to $10000 a month!

Cargo transportation activities are dangerous enough. Some simple rules should be observed that to minimize related risks:
1. Vehicle's technical inspection is 'must do' before run
2. Ensure proper performance of safety systems, namely videosurveillance, alarm and etc.
3. Remain fully committed to your duties and follow the scheduled route
4. Stay in touch with the dispatcher 24 h a day
5. Stick to the regulation on working and rest hours duration
6. Fully comply with traffic safety rules
7. Place cargo properly

Alcohol, drugs and truck driving

Over 500 000 truck-involved traffic accidents occur in U.S. annually. According to official statistics by FMCSA, only 1% of randomly checked truck drivers were tested positive for alcohol and drugs, which is actually very low value.

However, independent findings show that 12,5% of drivers were tested positive for alcohol, while 20% of them admitted taking ma*****na and 3% - co***ne.

Some drivers even confess in taking amphetamines en route to prevent falling asleep while driving. Alongside with this, a significant number of drivers was tested positive for caffeine and ephedrine.

DOT program envisages mandatory urine drug test and alcohol test both as a part of hiring routine and while trip.

Keep in mind that notwithstanding a growing drug legalization trend, PAS (psychoactive substances) should never be taken while driving.

Medical requirements to truck drivers

Solid health is what you surely will need to work as OTR driver. Only those meeting following criteria are permitted to drive trucks:
1. Visual acuity at least 20/40 on both eyes according to Snellen eye chart
2. Perception of whisper speech with 1 ear at least 5 feets distance
3. Distinguish red, yellow and green colors
4. No cardiovascular diseases record
5. Arterial blood pressure below 140/90 mm Hg
6. No findings in urine test
7. No drugs impacting physical and mental condition taken by a driver
8. No alcohol, narcotics or toxic substances addiction or mental deviations record

Driver with no health issues obtains DOT physical exam certificate valid up to 24 months.

Detailed truck check is a 'must do' to avoid receiving a fine and causing traffic accidents.

Major DOT points are: 
🔺Visual inspection (e.g. tires, headlights, mudflaps)
🔺Make sure you have necessary tools, first-aid kit, emergency stop sign, fire extinguisher
🔺 Confirm oil level
🔺 Check engine section
🔺 Remove inappropriate items from the cab and make sure upholstery is undamaged
🔺 Check the papers and keys
🔺 Check performance of vehicle electronics
🔺 Check brakes operation and trial engine start
