This may ruffle some feathers, but anytime I talk about making space in your budget for travel so your kids can experience the world before they grow up, I get told it’s “tone deaf.”
But is it really tone deaf to point out that experiences often leave a deeper impact on children than things do?
Study after study shows that family vacations create some of the most treasured childhood memories. Kids don’t usually grow up reminiscing about the extra toy they got one random Tuesday. They remember watching fireworks with their parents, seeing the ocean for the first time, laughing in a hotel pool at midnight, exploring new places, trying new foods, and feeling connected as a family.
Travel exposes children to different cultures, builds confidence, encourages adaptability, and gives families uninterrupted time together away from the constant distractions of everyday life. Even simple trips become part of a child’s emotional foundation.
And no, this doesn’t mean every family needs luxury vacations or expensive international trips. Sometimes it’s a road trip, a weekend getaway, a national park, or a budget-friendly cruise. The point isn’t perfection. The point is presence, connection, and shared experiences.
Childhood is shorter than we think. The world is bigger than the town we grew up in. And the memories made together matter.
