Happy New Year from Black Swan Moving

As we step into a new year, we at Black Swan Moving want to take a moment to reflect, express gratitude, and share a story that has inspired us deeply.

There’s an old tale about a Chinese farmer that goes like this:

One day, the farmer’s horse ran away. His neighbors came by to sympathize, saying, “What bad luck!” The farmer simply replied, “Maybe.”

The next day, the horse returned with a group of wild horses. The neighbors exclaimed, “What good fortune!” The farmer again replied, “Maybe.”

Later, the farmer’s son tried to ride one of the wild horses and broke his leg. The neighbors lamented, “Such misfortune!” The farmer replied, “Maybe.”

Soon after, soldiers came to the village, conscripting young men for war. Because of his broken leg, the farmer’s son was spared. The neighbors marveled, “What a blessing!” The farmer simply said, “Maybe.”

This story teaches us to embrace life as it unfolds, without rushing to label events as good or bad. At Black Swan Moving, we’ve seen both challenges and triumphs this past year. In the 18th century, it was common western belief that all swans were white. This was based on all observations made of swans to date. In 1697, Willem de Vlamingh, a Dutch explorer discovered black swans in Australia. This came as a surprise, and resulted in profound changes in the scientific history of ecology and zoology. Hence even though black swans exist, they are rare in nature.
