Bay scallops have returned to the Chesapeake after nearly 100 years, rebuilding a population once thought permanently lost.

The key detail is this. Their comeback depends entirely on the return of something else.

For decades, scallops disappeared as seagrass beds collapsed, removing the one habitat they rely on to survive. Unlike clams, they cannot burrow for protection. They live exposed, using rows of tiny blue eyes to sense danger and clap their shells to swim away in short bursts.

Restoration did not begin with scallops. It began with water quality. As pollution declined and seagrass slowly spread again, the conditions shifted. Once reintroduced, scallops responded fast. A single adult can release millions of eggs in a season, turning a fragile population into thousands when the environment cooperates.

Their return does more than restore a species. Scallops filter water, stabilize ecosystems, and help reinforce the very habitat they depend on.

What looks delicate is actually a signal of balance returning.
