Olga Rising is looking for an early morning biscuit baker to join our little island bakery crew.

This is not a “stand around and look busy” kind of job. This is flour on your pants, ovens roaring before sunrise, music playing in the kitchen, hundreds-of-biscuits-before-most-people-are-awake kind of job.

The ideal person:

• Likes early mornings (or has made peace with them)
• Can move with a little speed and rhythm once the day gets rolling
• Appreciates organized chaos
• Works well independently
• Has a good sense of humor
• Cares about quality and the little details
• Doesn’t mind smelling like butter for most of the day

Experience is great, but honestly, attitude and work ethic matter just as much here. We can teach the rest.

A big rave to all the parents, grandparents, and friends who brought their kids out to the fishing derby this past weekend. We’ve been lucky to be part of this island tradition for over a decade—one that’s been going strong for more than thirty years.

Watching these island kids grow up has been priceless. It’s one of my favorite days of the year on Orcas.

Traditions can fade over time, but this one still feels as special as ever. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about it—kids lined up at daybreak, families gathered by the water, that simple kind of joy you don’t see everywhere anymore. It feels like a glimpse of the old island I used to know.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and kept it alive. 🌲🐟

On April 25th, the Bill Yarlott Annual Youth Fishing Derby returns to Cascade Lake, carrying on a 30+ year tradition of kids, families, and a whole lot of fish tales.

This day has always been about more than fishing. It’s about laughter echoing across the lake, proud little hands holding up their catch, and the kind of memories that stick around long after the season ends.
