The RMS Titanic was powered by two massive four-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines and one low-pressure steam turbine.

Together, they produced about 46,000 horsepower and drove the ship’s three propellers, allowing Titanic to reach speeds of up to 23 knots (26 mph / 42 km/h).

The engines were fueled by coal-fired boilers and were among the largest marine engines of their time.

After the RMS Titanic fully disappeared beneath the surface at 2:20 a.m., the wreck is believed to have taken about 5 to 10 minutes to reach the seafloor nearly 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) below. During the descent, the ship broke apart violently, with the bow and stern falling separately through the dark Atlantic depths before crashing onto the ocean floor.

The bow of the RMS Titanic broke away around 2:18 a.m. and likely took about 5–10 minutes to sink nearly 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) to the ocean floor. Its smoother descent helped it remain relatively intact compared to the destroyed stern.

The tragic implosion of the Titan occurred in June 2023 during a dive to the wreck of the RMS Titanic. At a depth of nearly 12,500 feet (3,800 meters), the enormous ocean pressure crushed the submersible instantly after its hull failed.

The crow’s nest on the RMS Titanic was a lookout platform mounted high on the ship’s front mast. Its main function was to help crew members spot icebergs, ships, and other dangers ahead. On the night of April 14, 1912, lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee were stationed there when they famously spotted the iceberg directly in Titanic’s path.

The HMHS Britannic sank on November 21, 1916, after hitting a naval mine in the Aegean Sea during World War I.

The wreck lies about 400 feet (120 meters) underwater near Greece and remains in relatively good condition compared to the RMS Titanic.

April 10, 1912, Wednesday: By 8:30 that night Titanic was ready to depart Cherbourg. She raised her anchor and turned north. Her lights sparkled against the night sky as she sailed back into the English Channel.
