Norwalk parents and teachers: help your school walk, bike & roll!

National Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day is tomorrow, October 7 but your school can celebrate any day this October. Whether it’s a longtime tradition or your first event, this is a chance to get students moving, connect families, and start conversations about safer trips to school.

The Norwalk Bike/Walk Commission’s one-page toolkit makes getting started easy, with walking, biking, and e-bike safety resources to share with families.

Planning a school event October 19–23? We can help with:
➡️ Youth helmets and safety giveaways.
➡️ Volunteer support for helmet fittings and educational materials.
➡️ A bike safety presentation.

📧 Parents and teachers: want to get your school involved? Contact [email protected] for the toolkit and planning support.

Let’s make October the start of year-round walking, biking, and pedestrian safety learning!

What should the future of our regional trails look like? 🚲👟🦽🌿

A major planning and design initiative is underway to connect trails across Western Connecticut, including the Norwalk River Valley Trail. The larger vision is a continuous 55-mile trail system connecting seven communities from Norwalk to New Milford.

For Norwalk, the project would advance plans for the NRVT between Broad Street and the Route 7/15 interchange.

Now is your opportunity to share what matters most to you:

🚲 Safe and comfortable biking
👟 Better walking and running connections
🦽 Accessible trail design
🌳 Connections to parks and communities
🗺️ A more connected regional network

Help us shape the future of trails in Norwalk & Western Connecticut!

WESTCOG is seeking community feedback on the Western Connecticut Regional Trail Project, it's an initiative designed to connect the Norwalk River Valley Trail, Still River Greenway, Maybrook Trail, and New Milford River Trail as part of a continuous 55-mile regional trail system.

Here in Norwalk, the project would advance design plans for the Norwalk River Valley Trail between Broad Street and the Route 7/15 interchange.

Last week’s Bike to Work Day at Merritt 7 was proof that when people show up on two wheels, it adds up to real change. 🚲💚

We’re grateful for every rider, walker, and commuter who stopped by our Norwalk Bike/Walk Commission table to say hello, grab coffee, and talk about safer streets in our city. Thanks to you, cyclists walked away with tune‑up coupons worth about $100 each from our local partner SmartCycles, supporting well‑maintained bikes is one of the simplest ways to keep everyday riding safe and enjoyable.

We’re also excited to announce that we had SIX raffle winners, who will each receive a rear‑facing camera for their bike or scooter. Rear cameras and lights help riders stay more visible and aware of traffic conditions.

Events like Bike to Work Day do more than fuel one morning commute: regular bike commuting is linked with better cardiovascular health, lower risk of chronic disease, reduced stress, and improved mental well‑being, while cutting emissions and noise on our streets. Choosing a bike for even a few trips a week can significantly shrink your transportation carbon footprint and help make neighborhoods cleaner and quieter for everyone.

To everyone who came out: thank you for being part of a growing movement to make Norwalk safer, healthier, and more connected for people who bike and walk. If this picture inspires you, consider riding to work, to transit, or to your errands once this week, share your ride and tag us so we can keep celebrating the momentum together.
