Happy 65th birthday to the West Michigan Flying Club — one of the oldest and most active flying clubs in Michigan, and a true cornerstone of aviation at MKG.

Since 1961, generations of pilots have learned, flown, mentored, and shared their love of aviation with the club. Few organizations can claim a legacy like that. 😎

During the Wings Over Muskegon Air Show, first responders aren’t just passively standing by—they’re measured against the clock. 🚒✈️

While our normal Part-139 operating certificate to support airline service requires Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) response to reach any point on the airfield within 3 minutes, that standard is cut in half during the air show. Crews must be capable of responding anywhere on the airport in 90 seconds or less.

To make that happen, both Rescue 1 and 2 are fully staffed with specially trained firefighters from the Norton Shores Fire Department, in gear, staged at opposite ends of the show area, with an additional rapid-response vehicle positioned near show center. They’re suited up, engines running, and ready to move at a moment’s notice during the demonstrations.

But before the first performer ever takes to the sky, the FAA observes a live response exercise to verify the team can meet the standard. In 2024, Norton Shores responded to a complex incident scenario in an incredible 48 seconds—nearly twice as fast as the FAA requirement.

In an incident, the Air Boss says “roll the trucks” and crews respond in seconds.

Thank you to the men and women of NSFD for the professionalism, preparation, and dedication that help make our event one of the safest. Without them, there is no air show. 👏🚒✈️

The legendary C-130 “Hercules” is coming to Wings Over Muskegon! 🇺🇸

For 70 years, the C-130 has delivered troops, cargo, and humanitarian aid around the globe. Built to operate from short, rugged airfields, it’s one of the most versatile and recognizable aircraft ever flown.

Make plans to stop by the static display area, tour the aircraft, meet the crews and experience this legendary aviation workhorse up close! 🛫

Meet the “Air Boss” for Wings Over Muskegon - Brad!

One of the most critical positions sits on top of the communications trailer at show center in front of a small array of radios.

Long before the show, we coordinate with the FAA to establish a 5-mile Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over Muskegon during schedule demonstration windows. Think of it as a temporary “no-fly zone” that keeps non-participating aircraft out of the airspace so the demonstrations can be conducted safely. Once our local MKG air traffic controllers have cleared the five-mile airspace and the TFR is active, they hand control over to Air Boss Brad. Our MKG controllers monitor the TFR and watch for airspace intrusions, while the Air Boss stays laser-focused on the show itself. It’s an impressive ATC team effort.

From that moment until the flying ends, Brad, a fully qualified air traffic controller, is the conductor of the orchestra. Every performer, every takeoff, every landing, every emergency resource, and every movement in the aerobatic box is coordinated through him - often on the fly and in the moment. He’s in constant communication with pilots, our Airport Ops, local air traffic control, emergency crews, and event staff to keep the show running safely and on schedule to the minute.

It’s a job that requires incredible focus, extensive ATC experience, and serious calm under pressure.

Without the Air Boss, there is no air show. If you see Brad walking around the show grounds this year, give him a high five (and remind him to top off his sun screen). 😎

The show kicks off on August 21-23. Don’t miss it!

We’ve received multiple comments stating that flying to and from MKG is just… too easy. We’ll keep looking into it.😎

Did anyone notice the big snowblower and two dump trucks parked in the grass north of Runway 6/24 at Wings Over Muskegon in 2024? Kyle Franklin's Cub sure got a close up look at them! 😂

They aren’t put there by accident and they’re not (intentional) props for the pilots. Any guesses what their primary purpose is?

We’re going to spend the next few weeks diving into the behind-the-scenes efforts required to put on an air show. If there’s something you’ve always wondered about, drop a note in the comments.
