2.학교버스 운전자는 단순한 운전자가 아니다. 미국 교육스시템에 중요한 한 축(학생, 교사, 부모, 교육행정, 교육수송)을 감당한다. 아이들을 훈련할 수 있는 권한이 주어지면서 아이들을 돌보고 보살피면서 교육을 책임지는, 없어서는 안되는 필수불가결한 존재로서 보람을 경험한다.

3. 버스 운전은 우선 파트타임이다. 정말 힘들이지 않고, 스트레스 받지 않으며, 적당한 시간을 일할 수 있다. 대부분 많은 분들이 학교버스 운전을 6개월 하고 개인과 가정의 삶이 바귀었다고 증언한다. 정말로 가족과 함께 저녁이 있고, 주말이 있는 삶을 살 수 있는 일이다.
자영업자, 목회자, 은퇴자, 여성, 특히 중년 여성에게 좋다. 은퇴를 했지만 아직 건강한 분들에게도 좋다. 최근에 72세, 76세에 도전하셔서 면허를 취득하고 행복하게 일하는 분들도 계신다.
중년 여성에게도 좋다. 육체적으로 힘들이지 않고 적당한 시간을 일하면서 나의 시간을 가질 수 있다.

4. 보통 지점은 오전 2시간, 오후 2시간을 일한다. 내가 일하는 노스브룩 지점은 오전 2.5시간, 오후 2.5시간을 제공해준다. 다시 말하여 하루 5시간의 임금을 보증지불한다.거기에 더하여 유치원생을 태우는 미드(Mid route)를 하거나 학교에서 Lunch Monitoring를 하면서 풀 타임으로 일하는 분들이 많다. 풀 타임으로 일하는 분들은 한달에 보통 $4000불에서 $5000불 수입을 가져간다. 물론 더 많은 시간을 일하는 분들은 더 많은 수입을 가져간다.

5. 여름 방학에도 내가 일하는 지점은 Summer Camp, Summer school, Charter Bus 등 일이 많다. 약 90% 직원이 여름에도 일을 할 기회가 있다.

6. 학교버스 운전자는 각자의 형편에 맞게 운전할 수 있도록 가능한 배려한다. Fulltime driver는 오전, 중간, 오후 라우트를 감당한다. Part time driver는 오전 오후 라우트를 또는 오전만, 또는 오후만 감당하기도 한다.

7. Big Bus No Big Deal 큰 버스 운전을 두려워 하신다. 사실은 큰 버스 운전이 훨씬 더 쉽다. 모든 기계조작과 마찬가지로 버스도 운전 공식에 따르면 된다. 큰 버스 운전은 시야를 멀리 크게 볼 수 있어 더 안전하게 운전할 수 있다.

8. 학교 버스 운전사, 이제는 한인들을 위하여 새롭게 열리는 직업이 되었다. 지난 4년 동안에 약 50여명이 새롭게 학교 버스 운전사가 되었다. 한인들이 서로 도우며 즐겁게 일을 하고 있다.
