The Way It Was : On this Veterans Day honoring one of our now passed veterans & local aviators .. Over the years I've collected a lot of Maine aviators and veterans items and Colonel Don Strout and "Colonel Clink" as we all knew him was one of my favorites .. Don was from Brownville , Maine and his first flight was on July 19, 1936 .. Served in the Army Air Force during WW2 , continued in the AAF reserves after the war and went on active duty in the USAF in the late 1940's.. While in the Air Force he served as a missile silo commander , and maintenance officer in an F-100 Squadron .. After his service he settled in the Bangor area and became a fixture at BGR as a flight instructor .. Don's last flight was on September 10 , 1998 with an accumulated flight time of 19,807 hours .. One of the many who have served ..
