TRUCKING COMPLIANCE REMINDER: FORM 2290 DEADLINE

Heavy highway vehicle owners and operators don’t forget about your Form 2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)** filing requirements.

The current tax period runs July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027.

If your taxable vehicle was **first used on a public highway in July 2026, your Form 2290 filing deadline is August 31, 2026.

What carriers should know:

• Form 2290 generally applies to highway vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

• Your filing deadline is based on the **month the vehicle was first used on public highways, NOT the vehicle registration date.

• Vehicles placed into service after July may still require Form 2290, with the tax prorated based on the months in service

• Vehicles expected to travel 5,000 miles or less during the tax period, or 7,500 miles or less for farm vehicles generally still require Form 2290 to be filed, but the tax may be suspended.

• E-filing is required when reporting 25 or more vehicles and is encouraged for all filers.

• Your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 serves as proof of payment and is commonly needed when registering your vehicle.
