Statement from the Rhode Island National Guard on February 11, 2022

Due to operational challenges, the Adjutant General of the Rhode Island National Guard, Major General Christopher P. Callahan has made the decision not to host the Ocean State Air Show scheduled to be held June 25-26, 2022.

A number of factors contributed to this difficult decision including the relocation of the show onto Quonset State Airport property, the reduction in available parking in the Quonset Point/Davisville area, upcoming large-scale runway reconstruction projects at the Quonset State Airport, National Guard deployments and because of additional responsibilities that the National Guard has assumed to help Rhode Island address the pandemic.

We are grateful for the continued support from our Rhode Island interagency and air show partners. We will continue to work together to explore the possibility of holding the Ocean State Air Show in 2023.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COVID-19 concerns force cancelation of
2020 Open House Air Show

EAST GREENWICH, RI – The Rhode Island National Guard (RING) announced today that due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Open House Air Show will not take place. The Guard canceled the event as a precautionary measure in the fight against the spread of coronavirus.

Though the event was scheduled for June, Rhode Island leadership made the proactive decision to cancel the event and focus RING activities on protecting the health and safety of our fellow Americans. The Rhode Island National Guard is supporting our state and federal partners throughout the COVID-19 response.

Major General Christopher Callahan released the following statement regarding the decision:

“The cancelation of the 2020 RING Open House Air Show does not come without disappointment. The Open House Air Show is an opportunity to open our doors to the public and highlight the work our service men and women do to protect our state and nation each day. During this pandemic response, your Rhode Island National Guard has been mobilized to fight against the spread of the virus, training civilian medical personnel, staffing various call centers, distributing food and necessities to the most vulnerable, and performing a number of other critical functions. As such, our resources need to be acutely focused on the mitigation of the spread of this virus while remaining ready for our mission as the primary combat reserve of the Army and Air Force. We thank you for your continued support of our Rhode Island Soldiers and Airmen.”

An announcement was made today that due to
anticipated deployments in the coming year, the 2019 Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show has been cancelled. The show is anticipated to return in 2020. We would like to thank the community for the continued support.

Due to anticipated deployments in the coming year, the Rhode Island National Guard has decided to cancel the 2019 Open House Air Show.

Major General Christopher Callahan released the following statement regarding the decision:

“Since the 1991 inception of the RING Open House Air Show, opening our doors to the public has been an annual highlight for our organization and its members. With this anticipated federal mobilization commitment in 2019, we have been presented with a difficult decision regarding our ability to safely and effectively conduct this public event. The volume, timing, and the particular trained skill sets of the more than 500 Soldiers and Airmen who will be away during the traditional timeframe of the Open House Air Show presents a unique challenge. Ultimately, we could neither compromise the training and support of those being deployed, nor the planning and conducting of our Open House Air Show. As such, we regrettably must forego the event in 2019. The RING is grateful for the tremendous support we continuously receive from Rhode Islanders, our friends, and neighbors. We thank you for your continued support of our Rhode Island Soldiers and Airmen during this next wave of mobilizations, and we look forward to opening our doors to the public once again for the 2020 RING Open House Air Show.”
