👇 Check out this educational video on the history of active transportation in KCMO from Heartland Urbanist!

From the long history of the metro’s car-dependency and highway expansion, to the strong efforts toward bus rapid transit (BRT), Vision Zero, and the KC Streetcar, this video provides a great summary of the highs and lows of active transportation policy over time.

Kansas City usually shows up on urbanist channels' “worst of” lists. After all, it has more highway-lanes per person than any other city in America. But Kans...

We have released findings for our first Community Walk Audit and submitted a formal report to City Hall! 📝

On November 9, 2025, NKC BPAC conducted a Community Walk Audit of North Kansas City’s Fourth Ward, an area divided from the rest of the city by Interstate 29/35.

Our community volunteers found that…
⚠️ An angled crosswalk creates hazards for pedestrians in the River Forest Neighborhood
⚠️ Bus stops lacked boarding pads, benches, or shelters
⚠️ Pedestrian lighting was very dim under the I-29/35 underpass
⚠️ Integral curbs pose as trip hazards near residential intersections

NKC BPAC is actively engaging with the City of North Kansas City to help make improvements in these areas. Want to learn more about our walk audit? Read the complete report using the link in our bio! 📝🔗

FLEX ROUTE USERS: After March 31, KCATA Route 298 (“NKC Flex”) providing on-demand service within city limits is set to discontinue. Here’s what to know:

➡️ On December 2, 2025, City Council approved a contract for services with GEST, a door-to-door, on-demand transit service.
➡️ GEST provides service to and from NKC, Gladstone, Liberty, Parkville, and Riverside, as well as select Northland healthcare facilities. Fares are $3 per person per ride.
➡️ The City has approved a short-term contract with KCATA to continue flex route service more limited hours through March 31, with the option to renew through the rest of 2026
➡️ To try GEST, book a ride by calling 816-919-4378. For more information, visit gestcarts.com.
➡️ To learn more about the flex route, visit ridekc.org/routes and navigate to Route 298.

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who joined us on our first Community Walk Audit on Sunday! 🎉

NKC BPAC members were joined by many community volunteers, including from NKC Health, Clay County Public Health, NKCPD, and State Representative Eric Woods. Thank you all for teaming up for safe streets in NKC!

Walk audits are all-around assessments of the pedestrian environment. This includes reviews of sidewalk conditions and connectivity, intersections and crosswalks, traffic behaviors on nearby roadways, lighting, and much more.

NKC BPAC chose to conduct a walk audit of North Kansas City’s Fourth Ward, as it is largely divided from the rest of the city by I-29/35. This creates many challenges for vulnerable road users going west of the highway to community assets like Macken Park, Save-A-Lot, or City Hall. We also chose this location to assess the walkability near River Forest Park, which will be located in Ward 4 and is scheduled to open in April 2026.
