**Work Closes Walking Trail below Airport Heights**

In partnership with the City of North Bend, work is currently underway to improve defensible space along the trail corridor between the DHS Multi-Service Building and the newly-constructed cargo facility at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. While the work is happening, a walking trail between the cargo facility and DHS is closed along with the parking lot at the former dog park.

Outer Limits Construction is clearing overgrown brush and removing invasive Scotch and French Broom to better manage vegetation around critical infrastructure. The contractor is experienced in defensible space and Scotch Broom removal.

Proactive steps like these help support a safer, more resilient environment for our community, remove fire fuels, and protect the assets of the Coos County Airport District.

Earlier today, a very determined Goat named Oreo attempted to gain unauthorized access to the airport.

Maybe this goat had one goal in mind: greener grass on the other side of the fence (literally). What followed could only be described as a high-speed (okay, medium-speed) pursuit across approximately one mile of airfield-adjacent terrain. Our maintenance team gave chase as Oreo demonstrated impressive agility, evasive maneuvers, and a clear disregard for airport security protocols.

Oreo was eventually detained without injury. Despite a brief standoff (and some strong-willed resistance), Oreo was safely taken into custody by the Oregon State Police and returned home—where his owner is reportedly reinforcing the fence that started it all.

✈️ Moral of the story: Even goats have herd flying OTH is great!

🎉 Celebrating Decades of Dedication ✈️

Today, we honor the retirement of two incredible members of our maintenance team whose hard work has helped shape the airport you see today.

🔧 Scott Knight – 30 Years of Service
Scott began his career in 1996 at the Port of Coos Bay and transferred to the newly formed Coos County Airport District in 2001. Over the years, he rose to Maintenance Supervisor and even helped establish our Airport Fire Department as one of the first ARFF officers.

From building a new terminal and air traffic control tower to expanding the apron and cargo facilities, Scott has been there through it all. He’s led multiple shop relocations, brought key services in-house to save the District substantial funds, and has been the steady voice we call when something breaks — whether it’s a holiday, weekend, or the middle of the night.

His fingerprints are everywhere across this District. His leadership, integrity, and quiet dedication have left a lasting mark that will be felt for years to come.

🌟 Steve Bettelyoun – 18 Years of Service
For nearly two decades, Steve has been known as “Mr. Dependable.” He shows up early, works hard, and supports every project with professionalism and pride.

Steve has played a vital role in major milestones — from the new tower and hangars to the cargo facility and DHS campus development. His steady presence, team spirit, and yes… his mowing prowess, have helped keep our facilities safe, efficient, and looking their best.

Behind every safe landing, every smooth departure, every facility improvement, and amenities you see throughout our terminal and other district properties, there’s a team making it happen. Thank you Scott and Steve for your work training the next generation of CCAD Maintenance Technicians. Today, we proudly recognize your work through a few photos--and congratulate you on your Retirement. Enjoy!

Two groups of U.S. Army Apache and Blackhawk helicopters made an unexpected fuel stop at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) after weather diverted them from Eugene. They fueled up at Coos Aviation and are continuing a three-day journey from Washington to Texas, via California.

02/01/2026

Passengers departing from Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) in North Bend, or traveling through any airport, who do not have an acceptable form of identification—such as a REAL ID or passport—may still be able to travel by completing a TSA identity verification process.

This process includes a $45 fee, which must be paid and completed before entering the TSA checkpoint. Travelers choosing identity verification should plan for additional time, as the extra steps may extend the screening process and could result in delays.

TSA strongly encourages passengers to check their identification before arriving at the airport and plan ahead to ensure a smooth and stress-free travel experience at OTH. Visit TSA ConfirmID for information and to pay for the process. Confirm ID is good for 10 days when purchased. (https://www.tsa.gov/tsaconfirm-id)
