Captain's Log: The Lesser Cargo
The sun clawed its way over the eastern horizon, painting molten gold across a sea of clouds. The captain stood alone on the bridge, coffee cooling in his hand, eyes fixed on where heaven met earth.
The ship had been still for thirty-four hours.
The engines silent.
The decks quiet.
The crew resting.
But now came a choice.
Not every voyage begins with treasure.
Sometimes the next cargo isn't the highest paying.
Sometimes the next route isn't the shortest.
Sometimes the next step isn't the one we dreamed of.
Yet a wise captain knows a truth many never learn:
A ship was not built to sit at anchor.
The horizon does not reward those who wait forever for perfect winds.
It rewards those who raise the sails.
I often wonder if Moses learned this lesson long before he stood before Pharaoh.
Scripture is silent about his teenage years, but imagine the young Hebrew boy growing up in Egypt's palace. Running through marble halls with princes. Learning discipline from tutors. Studying warfare, leadership, language, and law alongside Pharaoh's household. Perhaps even crossing paths with young nobles who would one day command armies.
Moses was not yet a deliverer.
He was simply being prepared.
Day after day.
Lesson after lesson.
Discipline before destiny.
God was building a leader long before anyone knew there would be a nation to lead.
The palace wasn't the destination.
It was the classroom.
Many of us want the burning bush.
Few of us appreciate the palace.
We want the breakthrough.
God often sends preparation.
We want the giant load.
God gives us the smaller one that keeps the wheels turning.
We want the mountain.
God gives us another mile.
Yet every mile matters.
Every load teaches something.
Every sunrise carries a blessing.
Even difficult days carry hidden treasure.
The rough day teaches patience.
The slow week teaches stewardship.
The lonely road teaches dependence on God.
The smaller load teaches humility.
Not every day is a good day.
But every day contains good.
That is the secret many never discover.
As the engines rumbled awake and the ship began moving toward the horizon, the captain smiled.
The cargo wasn't magnificent.
The destination wasn't glamorous.
But the ship was moving.
And movement beats stagnation.
Because God cannot steer a vessel that refuses to leave the harbor.
So today, if the load seems smaller than you hoped, take heart.
Keep moving.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Keep trusting.
The same God who prepared Moses in a palace prepared David in a pasture, Joseph in a prison, and Paul in obscurity.
Preparation is never wasted.
The horizon belongs to those willing to sail toward it.
Scripture
Zechariah 4:10
"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin."
Galatians 6:9
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Proverbs 4:18
"The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."
Exodus 3:11
"But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'"
Even Moses did not yet see what God saw.
Captain's Prayer
Lord, when the load seems small and the road seems long, remind me that progress is still progress. Teach me to value preparation as much as arrival. Help me see the good hidden inside difficult days. Keep my hands steady on the wheel, my eyes fixed on the horizon, and my faith anchored in You. As the sun rises over a new voyage, let my heart rise with it.
Amen.
