Today 8 of our volunteers got together to clean up the first mile of our trackage from Newport Station to the Admiral Kalbfus crossing. We collected several trash bags worth of loose material, shopping carts, tires, and pieces of plywood along the right of way. Unfortunately all of these items were left here by trespassers who littered and dumped these along our tracks. Thanks to a $500 grant from the RIDEM we were able to purchase the necessary supplies for this clean up. We also worked with Clean Cities Newport who provided some supplies and will be disposing of the collected material. This photo shows our group and most of what we collected today. Check back soon for more photos and info on this clean up!

Our Melville yard is a great place to see a variety of historic rail equipment! Here we see NNB 43, a General Electric 44 tonner locomotive posed with the 1957 Budd RDC BC15, and our 1904 wood coach from the Boston & Maine Railroad. A MOW speeder is also on display here.

The former Fall River McDonald’s car is back on the rails! “New” trucks were sourced from a former NYC car in Chicopee, MA and placed under the car today. This is one of the many steps towards returning it to service so stay tuned for future updates! It’s great to finally have it on the trucks and not taking up room in the dinner train’s parking lot anymore.

Locomotive 84

Back in 2024 we shipped our 45 ton locomotive #84 to the Seaview Railroad Quonset Shop in North Kingstown, RI. There it’ll be getting the necessary repairs to return to service. Some work has already started but repairs to the engines and trucks will be the bigger lifts! Stay tuned for future updates!

Greene Lane, Middletown, RI

Back in the day this empty lot was a train station! Until 1937 you could get on a train here that would take you south to Newport or north all the way to Boston. Today it’s an empty lot but could one day be a station again. Imagine parking here and hopping on the train to skip the traffic and parking hassle of downtown Newport. Maybe if the bridge over the Sakonnet River is replaced you could even go to Boston! Maybe one day….For now it’s interesting to look back at history while being excited for what the future could hold.

This view is from locomotive 14 as it passes through Middletown with an equipment move.
