This is my latest project, an old GE Model 115 am radio, turned bluetooth speaker.
I had the radio sitting around. It was dead and a new life was in order. I decided that a full rebuild was not cost effective so I turned it into a usb powered bluetooth speaker using the original speaker.
The 21st century part I used is a 5 watt mono bluetooth 4.0 module and is affixed to the ceiling of the case with removable mounting tape.
If someone down the line wants to do a full rebuild, I have left the old AA5 AM radio (not working) intact but it has been fully bypassed.
But how does it sound?
It throws sound just like an old radio. (You can hear it clearly anywhere in my small house.
It is surprisingly loud for a 5 watt and quite clear for a 60+ year old paper speaker and is perfect for listening to music designed for AM radio.
Being USB powered it can go anywhere and it can run for hours on a small USB power bank or just plug it into a charge port.
I may do this to more broken or mostly gutted old radios. Especially, if people want to buy them from me.
