America Josh Moving to New York or America? Here's everything you could possibly need to know! Hello!

I’m Josh Pugh and I arrived in New York in January 2017 from Adelaide, South Australia with a suitcase and not much more. While I found lots of resources across the internet to help with my move, I couldn’t find a reliable central point with information about the basics; so I thought I’d fix that. This site is a compilation of answers to frequently asked questions I’ve found on forums, Facebook pa

ges and from my own experience. The content is always changing and evolving as I learn more and as helpful people submit updates.

There's something easy about starting a Friday with good coffee and a few familiar accents — and Aussie Coffee in Santa Monica is back TOMORROW! ☕

We've teamed up with Australians in California and Bread + Butter (a Tasmanian bakery right here in LA) to host these morning catch-ups. It's as casual as it sounds: pop in, say hello, stay for ten minutes or two hours. There's always a mix of people who just landed and people who've been here years, all comparing notes on life in California.

Bread + Butter brings a little slice of Tasmania to LA — small-batch, baked fresh that morning, with coffee good enough to wash it all down. Yes, including a real flat white. Hosted by Michael Hardy, in partnership with Qantas.

Register to join our exclusive WhatsApp group where we share upcoming dates and any last-minute changes, then just turn up and look for the Aussies.

Australian food snobs, this one's for you. 🍔

We all arrived in America with the same assumptions: huge portions, too much fast food, everything deep fried. But once you actually spend time here, there's a whole world of American food that deserves way more credit than we give it.

Micharne's latest column digs into the American foods that won her over, and the cultural translations every Aussie needs to know. She covers:

- Why Mexican food in the US is on another level (and the difference between Mexican and Tex-Mex)
- The fact that "BBQ" means something completely different here and it's an entire cuisine worth exploring
- American pie vs Aussie meat pies (both countries are missing out)
- The food translations that will save you from confusion, like why "biscuits and gravy" is nothing like what you're imagining

Also, burnt ends. If you haven't tried them yet, you're welcome in advance.

What's the American food that surprised you the most when you moved here? Drop it in the comments!

Green and gold, gather round — AUS vs. USA is on, and we want you in the room with us. TOMORROW! 💚💛

We've teamed up with the Australian Consulate-General in New York to reserve an indoor spot for 400 Aussies at the German House of Soccer, the official World Cup fan zone. Think huge screens, a full bar and kitchen, and a whole crowd of fellow Australians ready to cheer the boys on. There's nothing quite like watching from home turf when home is this far away.

Doors open at 2pm, kick-off at 3pm. It's free (RSVP required), family-friendly, all ages, and wheelchair accessible — so bring the kids, bring your mates, bring everyone. Rock up when it suits you, claim a seat, and settle in for the roar. Prefer the open air? Sadie's at the Seaport is the sister watch party under the Manhattan sky.

Austin mates — TOMORROW we're getting together for the World Cup match we've all circled on the calendar: USA vs. Australia! ⚽🇦🇺🇺🇸

We've teamed up with the Aussie Aussie Austin crew and Russ Macumber from Impressive Digital to throw a proper watch party. The game's playing live, there's a pool to cool off in, and a smoked pork shoulder ready for sharing. It's BYO for your snags, burgers, sides, and drinks — bring a plate to share and you're all set.

Expect friendly rivalry, familiar faces, and the kind of afternoon that makes Austin feel a little more like home. Whether you're cheering for the Socceroos or backing the Stars and Stripes, you're welcome here.

Places are limited so registration is essential — please pop your numbers of adults and kids in the comments when you register.

TOMORROW! ⚽ We're taking AUS vs. USA outdoors, and you're invited.

We've got one of NYC's biggest open-air bars all set up at Sadie's NYC — the match across screens, cobblestones underfoot, and a green-and-gold crowd ready to roar for the Socceroos under a Manhattan summer sky. 💚💛

It's free, walk-up friendly, and all ages are welcome. Doors open 2pm, kick-off 3pm — get there early to save your spot in the crowd. Want a guaranteed indoor seat instead? Our sister event at German House of Soccer in Chelsea has reserved seating.

Proud to be hosting this one alongside the Australian Consulate-General in New York.

Wear your green and gold and bring the energy. Who's in? Tag a mate who won't want to miss this one!

Coffee with New Friends is on TOMORROW! ☕ If you've been meaning to come along, this is your sign.

Every Friday we meet at 10:30 and this week we're at Laughing Man Cafe in Tribeca. The concept couldn't be simpler: a delicious coffee, a great local business to support, and a room full of friendly faces — some you'll know, plenty you won't yet.

It's for absolutely everyone. New to New York? This is one of the easiest ways to meet people. Been here for years? Come reconnect. There's no formal structure, so just pop in whenever suits and stay as long as you like. Come solo or bring a mate along.

Big thanks to Qantas for partnering with us, and hosted by our own Josh. Register to join our WhatsApp group, then just arrive from 10:30 and say g'day!

If you've ever looked at a jar (or two... or three) of American coins and thought "what on earth do I do with all of this?" — you're not alone.

This is one of those uniquely Aussie-in-America problems. You move here, you don't really understand the coins, you hoard them because they're too annoying to use, and suddenly you've got enough loose change to fund a small vacation. The kicker? Banks in the US don't actually have to accept your coins. And most of them have gotten rid of their free coin counting machines.

We put together a full guide covering all your options, including:

- Taking them to the bank (and which banks make it easiest)
- CoinStar machines and how to avoid their fees entirely
- Donating your change
- A pro-tip about carrying singles that'll genuinely change your daily life

There's even a fun tip about checking your quarters — some minted before 1965 are worth way more than 25 cents.

Be honest... how many jars of coins are sitting in your apartment right now? 😅

If you've ever sat in the waiting area at the US Consulate, heart racing, triple-checking your folder for the fifth time, you know exactly what E3 visa interview day feels like.

Whether it's your first time or your tenth renewal, those nerves never fully go away. We put together a checklist of 8 things to remember before you walk in, covering everything from the full document list you need to have printed and sorted, to why it's not really an "interview" at all (seriously), to the one letter that's becoming more crucial than ever.

The article breaks down:
- Why you don't need to answer "correctly," just honestly
- The complete document checklist so nothing gets missed
- A folder organization system that'll save you mid-interview panic
- What the interview actually looks and feels like in practice

If you've been through the E3 interview process, what's the one thing you wish someone had told you beforehand? Drop it below for anyone who's about to go through it for the first time. 👇

Some of the best nights out are the ones that catch you off guard, make you laugh, and quietly wreck you in the best way — and this one starts TOMORROW! 🎭

Two fearless Australian artists, Tracey Yarad and Karen Jacobsen, are bringing two powerful one-woman shows to the Hollywood Fringe Festival, performing back-to-back at The Little Theater at The Actors Company from June 19 to 28. Both blend music, storytelling, comedy, and real honesty, and both follow a woman reclaiming her story after life falls apart.

Tracey's "All These Pretty Things" has performed 90+ times across the UK and Australia, picking up five-star reviews and award-winning runs along the way. Karen — yes, the original Australian voice of Siri — makes her US premiere with a candid, moving show about courage and stubbornly continuing forward even when you've lost the map. 🇦🇺

The schedules are staggered, so on several days you can see both in one visit. If you're an Aussie in LA, this is a genuinely good excuse to back two of our own doing remarkable work on stage.
