HOW TO BUILD A BRAND
Sammy Blindell

Content: From Jester to King in 30 Days

Content is all the rage. In fact, it’s been called King.

Let’s get something straight, though: Not just any content will do.

The content you provide and market must be tailored to your audience; it must speak directly and emotively to your ideal customers; it must move them to take action.

If you think simply following trend reports and rewriting “hot” articles in order to create content that fits into your industry guidelines or attracts the attention of search engines is enough, you’re missing out.

You’ve been missing out on the opportunity to hit a nerve that marries your ideal customer to your brand and compels them to share the good news with others like them. You’re missing out on the engagement that comes when consumers find the one brand that understands them, their problems, their pains and their preferences.

Are you accomplishing this with your content?

Or have you fallen into the habit of creating content that is too general, too mainstream…too “perfect” for every reader?

Your content may not be king. Sadly, it may be more of a jester.

But guess what? In a matter of 30 days, you can crown that content, because your audience will have placed it on a throne of its own.

Let’s make today day #1 in that 30-day journey.

Building a Brand with the Right Content

Follow these guidelines, in order and without skipping any steps, and in 30 days, you will have established the foundation of a kickass content marketing strategy. You will be well on your way to building a brand with content—the right content.

Day 1: Answer the question, How does my ideal customer prefer to get his content? This could be video (live or pre-recorded), audio, written content, email, direct mail, texts, webinars, transcripts, etc. Commit the time today to “stalking” your ideal customers to learn about how they get their news, how they prefer to be entertained, how they stay connected…and then create a content strategy (types of content, timing of content) that caters to those preferences.

Day 2: Identify how many customer stages are involved in your brand and divide up your content strategy to give each one what they’ll need, specifically. Some clients are just starting out, whilst others want to bridge the next horizon. Don’t force every customer to engage with every piece of content. Instead, segment them into sub-lists and provide each with what they need from you at the moment.

Day 3: Use the sub-lists you created yesterday to determine just what you need each type of customer to do in order to work toward the next stage. Do they need introductory education? Do they need to complete steps that will further their learning or accomplishment? Do they need to make a purchase to stay active within your brand community? Do they need to more actively engage with your brand’s communications? Is it time to refer a friend or take a risk?

Day 4: The first three days’ exercises should have provided you with a clear picture of what every type (stage) of customer wants from you right now. Today is the day you will list those things: the things you’ll write about—the intellectual property you will share with your customers, to build trust and establish expertise.

Day 5 through Day 29: These 25 days may all bear the same instructions; however, know that the commitment you show in creating content every day will be in direct proportion to the results you net from this month. Publish a blog post every other day. Know which sub-list you’re targeting with each post and then share that post (social media, etc.) in the places where members of that sub-list are congregating. On non-blog days, create a video, a podcast, a webinar, an email…something that is tailored for, and delivered to, customers at the stage where it will best serve them. Depending on how many sub-lists you have, you may need to create more than one piece of content every day. All-in-all, I would suggest that each person be exposed to at least three pieces of content per week…no less.

Day 30: This is the day when you test and measure. Take a hard look at each type of content published, view the analytics, and determine what types of content, what subject matter and what sharing methods have netted the most engagement. Also take note of which sub-lists are most responsive (to which type of content, to which sharing method, on what days, and at what time(s) of day). Use what you learn to create your content strategy for your next 30 days.

building-a-brandAre you ready? Are you ready to experience the boost in brand awareness, recognition and engagement that 30 days can bring? Then right now is the time to start building a brand with content. Get into your ideal customer’s head and let’s go! There’s a throne awaiting your content…and your brand.

Content is one piece of the synergistic energy that makes up brilliant branding and marketing strategies. If you’d like to learn more about building a brand, to make it more credible, visible and profitable, then sign up to attend a B.R.A.N.D. Building Bootcamp. Learn more and register here.

FACTORS THAT ATTRACTS ANGEL INVESTORS TO YOUR BUSINESS by Israel Akinyele

The Important Factors that attracts Angel Investors

It’s a rule of thumb that it will always take longer to raise angel financing than you expect, and it will be more difficult than you had hoped. Not only do you have to find the right investors who are interested in your sector, but you have to go through meetings, due diligence, negotiations on terms, and more.

Read More: WHAT AN ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ANGEL INVESTORS

Raising capital can be a very time consuming process and the investors must also be attracted to your business. Here are what angel investors particularly care about:

The quality, passion, commitment, and integrity of the founders.

The quality of the founder’s proposition is key, the angel investor should see prospect in it. The founder must also exhibit passion, commitment and should be someone of integrity. These are the first impressions a founder should give a prospective angel investors.

The market opportunity being addressed and the potential for the company to become very big.

The business plan must have a viable market and should be one with an enviable prospect of rapidly developing over the years.

A clearly thought out business plan, and any early evidence of obtaining traction toward the plan.

A founder must be equipped with a clearly thought out business plan that has been thoroughly researched and the necessary feasibility study carried out. He/She must also show evidence of formulated plans to propel the business to the ”promised land”. This should be stated in the business plan and also in the course of presentation.
Interesting technology or intellectual property.

You don’t just go to an angel investor without putting some plans in place. Putting some necessary things in place portrays you as a serious and passionate founder. You must also possess knowledge of the business you are going into. Mind you, the biggest selling point of an entrepreneur is his/her intellectual property i.e. his understanding and knowledge.

An appropriate valuation with reasonable terms.

This factor is one that if not carefully handled could scare off the investor or shortchanged you. You should carry out adequate research to ascertain the value of your business plan. Failure to do this could end up in you over-valuing your plan, thus, scaring off the investor; or under-valuing it, thus, shortchanging yourself. Careful attention to this will result in a win-win situation for both parties.
Taking the aforementioned into consideration will make getting an angel investor easier.

Bad Work Habits to Eliminate Before Becoming an Entrepreneur

We all have bad work habits, and most of us are content to get away with them for the foreseeable future. Sure, they may make us a little less productive, and they might not look great in a performance review, but they’re relatively innocuous when they creep into our daily lives.

When you step up to be an entrepreneur, everything changes. You’ll have more direction, more authority and more freedom, but you’ll also have far more accountability for your decisions and habits. Not only will most of your actions have a direct and substantial impact on the health and future of the business, they’ll also set an example for the other people you work with, and set a tone for the entire organization.

Before stepping out fully as an entrepreneur, be sure to eliminate these bad work habits:

1. Not planning your day (or week).

You can get away with this in a job you can muddle through, but, as an entrepreneur, if your priorities aren’t clear, you may never be able to dig yourself out of that hole. Each day, and each week, preview everything you need to do and organize those tasks based on order of importance.

2. Reacting to emails as soon as they come in.

Prompt responses are almost always a good thing, so there’s no fault in wanting to respond as quickly as possible. However, responding to emails all day is an inefficient way to go about your tasks. Plan your projects and tasks in advance, and don’t let emails relentlessly distract you. One exception to this rule, however, is sales personnel, whose quick email response may prove essential for landing a sale.

3. Communicating inefficiently.

Inefficiently written emails or conversations in meetings might cause a slight hiccup in someone's average day-to-day work, but in the context of a budding business, these problems may cause serious headaches and make your company look unprofessional. Take an inventory of your communications skills, and make improvements where necessary. Don’t rush through anything, and think carefully about what you mean to say.

4. Settling into a firm routine.

Routines are useful for productivity, especially for everyday tasks you might otherwise forget. However, settling too deeply or firmly into a routine could put you in a poor position when things change abruptly (and they will in a startup). As an entrepreneur, be flexible enough to change your approach when the situation demands it.

5. Never taking breaks.

It often seems like a good idea to work through your breaks to get more done, since it’s basically a free hour or two to add to your total workday. However, working through breaks can take its toll on your psyche and productivity. As an entrepreneur, six hours of great work is better than eight hours of okay work, and you definitely don’t want to run the risk of burning out.

6. Running late.

If you're an employee coming in to catch up on emails, being 10 minutes late usually doesn’t matter. But, as an entrepreneur meeting with prospective clients or otherwise setting an example for the team, running late can damage your image. It’s okay to set your own schedule, but when you say you’ll be somewhere, you need to be there, and on time.

7. Procrastinating on tough projects.

That monster project awaiting you might do fine sitting on your desk in your current day job, but procrastinating the tough jobs as an entrepreneur usually only makes things worse. If you can’t handle something, delegate it or seek outside assistance. Don’t just set it to the side.

8. Delaying hard decisions.

You probably make few decisions in your current position, at least compared to the many you’ll make as an entrepreneur. Hard decisions may take their toll on you, but you need to come down on one side or the other. Even a bad decision is better than no decision, so eliminate your habit of delaying decisions now.

9. Never saying no.

At the lower rungs of the corporate ladder, the word “no” is taboo, and the habit of saying yes to everything seems to stick around in our careers for years. When you become an entrepreneur, you need to get comfortable with saying no. Not every client is worth taking. Not every employee candidate is worth hiring. Not every idea is worth pursuing.

10. Multitasking.

Multitasking is another one of those pesky habits that only seems to save you time. In actuality, it distracts your mind so you complete simultaneous tasks less efficiently than you would had you completed them individually, and with greater focus. As an entrepreneur, you’ll need all the focus you can get.

These ten habits won’t necessarily destroy your business, but they could interfere with your ability to work productively and in a way that ultimately benefits your organization.

It may take some patience to eliminate them entirely, but you’ll be in a far better position once you do.
